Default The squeak from hell

I have a squeak in my rear end somewhere...everytime I go over a bump or if the car bounces a little there is this loud annoying SQUEAK coming from the car. It sounds like the rear end somewhere. Kind of like a "springy" squeak. If I open the trunk and sit on the car and bounce it up and down... squeak... squeak... squeak

So, since the car had been in Arizona for the past 12 years, I figured...bushings. So I changed the Torsion Bar and Sway Bar bushings. The squeak was still there. So, I thought Leaf Spring bushings...once I started looking at that, the springs were original, I thought I would go ahead and put new springs on. Put on new springs (replacement from Zip), new front bracket, new mountiung pin and hardware, new rear hangers and hardware and new rubber bushings.

The damn SQUEAK is still there! The only other thing I can think of is shocks but they look fairly new. Anyone got any ideas?

Pretty sure it isnt axle bearings as the squeak is not constant..it only happens when I hit a bump or the car bounces up and down. It does it when sitting still in the garage if I bounce the rear end up and down. Not sure about U-Joints...I'll hit them with some lithium grease.

suggestion:
invite a friend over to stick his / her head under the car, or just outside of under each side of car to listen while you do your trampoline thing on the open trunk. Maybe you will then get a clue where the annoying sound eminates from.

Default The thread name describes my car perfectly!

My front 800 lb front springs kind of squeek! I love whipping up to a stop light next to unsuspecting fellow motorists and do a super fast come to a stop on my warmed up J-56's. The squeek really gets everyones attention, when the occupants look over and say where in the hell did that thing come from? "" Squeek-squeek!!!!!!!!! The pull away from the light because of the side mount headers prohibit hearing it on acceleration!

Ps I don't think my front Squeek is the same as your rear Squeak!

I thought when I first viewed the thread, you might have ran across me on the road!

Check your exhaust pipes also. My 57 has a periodic PITA squeak that I've traced to tailpipe hangers and where exhaust exits bumpers!

If you can create the squeak when you are sitting still you have it made. Have someone bounce the car and make it squeak and you get under it and listen for it. Bring a can of silicon or WD-40 and spray it on any item in question. If you can here, you will find it.

As twice suggested, I would get someone to bounce the rear end (or vise versa) and get under the car to locate the noise. Sure would be a heck of a lot cheaper than to keep replacing parts.

If you mean the Torsion Bar, yes I changed the bushings, however I did not change the studs.

Some polyurethane bushings are know to make a squeaking noise even when new.

No, I meant the strut rods that go from the rear housing forward to the frame.

Mine is a C1 (1961), I am not sure I understand what you are referring to. I called it a Torsion Bar, however it is sometimes referred to as a Radius Rod. See the diagram...

Sometimes it pays to lube the zerk fittings twice...once with weight off wheels and again with the weight on the wheels. It cured nasty squeaks on my '61

For the sway bar and radius rod, poly. For the springs, rubber
