Default 63 storage compartment board question

Is the bezel supposed to be chrome or just natural finish on a 63. What year(s) used chrome?

Thanks

Thanks for confirming the chrome. I guess the next question is does anyone have one that is not chrome. I have two and one is chrome and one is not. They are both 63 boards.

This expalins it. The sticker on my board is dated 10/24/62 and the bezel is not chrome. I have another one dated 12/10/62 and the bezel is chrome.

Ok I have another board question. Are the 63 boards a different size than the rest of the midyears. I have two originals and they both fit a little differently and are a slightly different size. Does anyone know for sure.

Paragon has all three sizes - '63, '64, and '65-'67.

Thanks John I did not even think about checking the part supplier catalogs. This does confirm that they were different sizes. Do you know if only the very early 63 bezels were not chrome. I have one chrome and one not and I want to use the correct bezel for my February built car.

Thanks again

The 5th Edition of the '63-'64 JG sez the bezel was plain or zinc plated in '63, and chrome for '64. Don't know what the new 6th Edition says.

John that is very interesting. I have one that does appear to be zinc plated or plain that is from an original 63 board and I have another one that is chrome that I am not sure what year board it is from but it is slightly bigger than the 63 one. Also the 63 board that I have is a board that has a metal plate that is riveted to the board that holds it together otherwise it would be in two pieces. It is a very professional looking job. Could this be from the factory or were they all one piece boards. If it is someones repair it is really good. Have you ever seen a board like this.

Thanks
Jay

I have a very original and unmolested car built in February 1963.

My bezel is chrome.

Rich... it should be zinc plated as John has pointed out in post #14.

Bruce,

I just looked at it again...... quite sure that it is original.

The bezel has a moderate sheen or luster (definitely not plain) so it must be considered zinc plated.

Rich that is how I would describe the zinc plated one that I have that is on an original 63 board. I only referred to it as plain because it is definitely not chrome plated.

FWIW.........

I've owned my 63 since 1967..... It's a late car, built in July, 63.

It has a "non chrome" bezel. It's not shiny cad or zinc. It's a muted, smooth finish with a dull sheen. It's not bare steel. It's mounted on the original board which has the original carpet and the original jacking instruction sticker.

Just for yucks, years ago, I bought a chrome plated one which I keep in the tool box in the car.

At the time I bought it, the NCRS JG called for chrome, so I bought one just in case.
