Any good recommendations on a place to get my convertible frame restored and painted with a new Ncrs top? In Detroit are would be best.

Thank you

I sent my frame to Coffmans and had them restore it and then took my '66 to their shop...

...to have them install the restored frame along with a Al Knoch top. They powder coated the frame so it'll never have to be done again.

Clint (on the left) and his crew did a first rate job all around. I highly recommend them.

About to restore my top also and was considering to powder coat frame.
Did the powder coating not increase the weight a lot?

Not that I can tell. I use powder coating on many of my shop projects:

and I never really gave the weight any consideration. I think powder coating for convertible top frames is now being widely used for it's durability. It's an ideal medium for that application.

Nice pictures, thanks, Cleveland is a pretty good drive...and it's winter here in Michigan...being from the automotive market and using powder coating for a while agree only, way to go and it would not add any more weight than normal paint of the same mil coverage.

From where I live in central Illinois it was a 370 mile, 7 hour drive one way to Coffman's. I had previously met Clint at Bloomington Gold and was very impressed with him so I decided it was well worth the extra hassle going all that way to his shop. I had shipped them the frame ahead of time so they it all done with part of the fabric installed on the frame. By doing it that way they could get the top installed on the car in a couple of hours while I waited. It was just one day out of my life but the quality of his good work will last for years and years. Every time I use my top I'm reminded of the good attention to detail they have and the fun time I had touring his shop.

Paragon restores top frames, and has kits for the DIY'ers - they're only about an hour north of you.

How involved is the convertible top install for us DIY'er types?

I've done a couple of my own, will probably do the next one as well when it comes due. For me, I'd say it's fairly involved, but doable . . . . .

Normally I do my own work. I just arranged to have our top done by the guy who did our E-Type seats (which are a b+++h). He said C2 Corvettes are a bit hard to do as the current tops aren't made the same as the originals at the rear. It's tempting to save the ~ $650 for the install and have the satisfaction, but we just didn't want to take the chance. A real pro means no risk, do it yourself does present at least some risk. The install cost is high enough to cause some thought, but it is a kind of unique skill set.

Hi Nightfltjoe and welcome to the forum. Look closely and you'll see that post you have asked about is dated from 2014. If you want to contact Coffman's here's a link: https://www.coffmancorvette.com/
I'm confident you'll be happy with their work. Good luck.

Hi, No, I am not a shop. However, I work for several Corvette shops in the Cleveland area installing tops and restoring seats. I would be happy to take a look at it.
I live in Macedonia.
Send me a PM and we can make arrangements.
