Default Ominous Sign-Fuel Pump

Today, I fired up my '64 just to warm it up since it is not on the road. I saw a fluid on the top of the fuel pump after it started. It smelled like fuel. When these fail, will they leak fuel onto the top of the pump? If so, who has the best rebuild kit? Thanks all.

Yep, the diaphragm has cracked. I bought mine from Long Island Corvette Supply. Easy enough to do In a couple of hours.

Thank you Chris. Just checked the Long Island Corvette and the rebuild kit is not available currently. Does anyone have any other good (not Chinese) sources for a rebuild kit. Thanks again Chris for the info.

Corvette Central has rebuild kits for $80.00
Rock Auto has new AC Delco pump #40083 for $59.00

I question if Rock Auto "AC Delco" stuff is legit AC Delco.
Some of the so called AC parts I have purchased there appear to be Chinese knock offs, complete with packaging.

Or if you're not focused on the "numbers" and want a quality replacement, just get an AIRTEX 4657 from Advance Auto or your FLAPS. They work well.

Default Oil

Don't forget to change you oil after the fuel pump issue has been addressed. When the pump goes south, it can leak fuel into the crankcase. Jerry

That's funny, I had the exact same problem with my '64 the other day. Fuel all over the top of the pump and a small puddle underneath it. Coincidence?

Another coincidence-My '64 was and will be white like yours except it is a coupe. Thank you all for your responses and suggestions.

Dave

I just put an Airtex 4656 in my '60 about 2 weeks ago. Working fine so far. The pump in the car (replaced about 8 years ago) failed when the rocker arm return spring lost 3 loops and the pin retaining the arm slipped out. I'm amazed the car was running. I happened to notice the slipped pin when I was working under the car doing some other things.

I have attached some info from Airtex regarding the 4656 and 4657 pumps. I got mine from Amazon for around 42.00. including tax and free shipping.
Also attached some info on replacing the pump from me, 62Jeff and Coves4me.
