C2 Transmission numbers matching questions
Was the transmission stamped with a number that matched the vin? I've read all the archive info on numbers matching and think I've got it figured out except this one point
Thanks

Look at the driver side of the trans where the main case joins the tail section. You should see the vin stamped vertically. Dennis

To expand on 5thvet's lengthy reply type in "transmission vin numbers location" in the "search this forum" box at upper right. You should be able to find out all you need to know.

Then, in '65, they were supposed to add the letter "S" before the last 6 digits for the trans only (ie. S1xxxxx; ie dropping the year prefix). Early '65s may not have got the message. This does not match the engine format, which continues with 7 digits.
Then, in 1966 and 67, they added the model year before the S, for the transmission (ie 6S1xxxxx). The engine pad remained the same (61xxxxx -no S, except for a rumoured few real early cars which supposedly didn't get the message).
