Tach cable lubrication 1961

Remove both connectors behind the cluster and at the trans. Pull the cable out through the firewall grommet, this keeps the cable straighter. Remove the inner cable. Grease it, reinstall. The inner cable has a stop (attached washer) on one end to keep it from falling into the trans. My brain won't let me remember which end right now. That is it really. You will probably have to remove the screws on the cluster and slide it out an inch or so to get better access behind it. I use a couple of 1/4 X 20 threaded stock in a couple of cluster holes to keep it in place. Probably take an afternoon and two rum and cokes.

Ahhh, trans? You mean generator to tach, or if high horse power fuel injection distributor to tach. Buuut we know cable maintenance are all the same, remove, grease, and reinstall. Just didn't want the OP to disconnect speedometer cable, but then why not do all your cables and be done with it!

Be sure to have the stop with felt washer is at the gage cluster end. if not the rotation of the cable will force lube up into the tach/speedo, and you don't want that.

Can you elaborate on this. I'm not sure what "stop with felt washer" means. I just reinstalled my rebuilt dash cluster and the tach is noisy. I'm guessing it's the cable. Does it have to be disconnected at the tach end to lube??

I have quieted a noisy cable before by disconnecting the tach end; holding the cable vertical with a rag around it and dumping a good chunk of powdered graphite down the cable then shaking and dumping some more in there. Pulling the inner cable out of the sheath is better but then its a crap shoot to get it back in all the way - I don't do it.
The lube will eventually work its way back up the cable while driving.
