1961 Restoration Follow Along
Figured I'd start a page as I restore this one. It's a nice one that belongs to a friend from NY. I'll update as the work continues. As many of you know, I'm a stickler when it comes to rebuilding everything myself.
I'm tackling many things at once to get this done as soon as possible. Once I get everything restored and rebuilt back on the "Done" shelves, assembly should be pretty quick.
I'll also be doing a complete soft top frame restoration and rag installation. If I have time i may do a full tutorial on both procedures and put it up on the website when it's done.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the kind words. I enjoy these cars very much.
I have to apologize about the website oddities as it's just my Comcast Personal Web Page that comes with my ISP package. I used to make better looking sites but opted to just use their cookie-cutter type software and the free 1Gb space. Someday I need to make it better with a easier directory structure on a offsite space with more features.
The last few days I've been helping a good friend diagnose a strange problem with his '65 Fuelie. We just finished replacing trailing arm bushings and pulled the diff out to fix a pinion leak. Got it all back together today and just have to bleed brakes in the morning and take it for a test drive to see if it''s fixed.
I had to take a few pics of it on the lift. It's stunning. 375hp stock fuelie under the hood.

That's great, Rich. I'll be extremely interested in the soft top frame restoration and rag installation. Please show as much detail as you can, I'll be following closely!

Thanks......Yes identical combo to yours. This is a very late car just before the 10k mark.
The only unique option is that it originally had semi-metalic brakes, RPO 686. The Posi unit code id'd that. But for driveability it has now has stock brake shoes.

Updated....
On to some more stuff. See the 5-21 pics.Cluster fun.
Today the objective is to get the main harness installed, the steering box fully assembled and installed, the windshield buttoned up(it's loosely set right now) with the harness clips, install the cluster gauges and drop it in the hole, and get the steering working. It's a pain moving this hulk without a steering wheel.

Yea I know, well that WAS the plan. between company entertaining and a bad housing stud after I got it together I had to adjust the schedule.
It was all together then attaching the radio cap, pulled the stud out. It was originally missing, and I rethreaded it but wasn't sure if it would hold the upper & lower castings together. It did, but broke free on the last step.
Ended up drilling and threading for 1/4-28, and made my own "threadsert" on the lathe from a brass coupler.
Geesh, what it takes sometimes. 5 minute job takes a hour.

More fighting.....
Had to take about a pound of foam from behind the AK dashpad, and some vee cuts and a heatgun to soften the way....then it fit! And with some gentle persuasion with much resistance as usual. I use five 1/4-20 Phillips screws for a temporary fit so the dashpad gets to learn it's new friend. After they become very well acquainted, for a while, those funky shoulder hex head bolts go in.
Now off to the steering box assembly. I got the top end painted yesterday when I hit the cluster housings, so I'm good to go.

42k original miles......wow. You need to take a lot of pictures.
Well, At least I got the steering assembled and adjusted. Forgot I had to build the steering wheel too, so I could do the adjustments. I use studs to hold the end cover on until I'm happy, then transfer one at a time to the original bolts.
That small scale is used to help get the lash specs right, about 1/2 lb on the worm gear bearings, and then about 1 1/2 lbs after that for the sector shaft end play adjustment.
Maybe I'll install in the car tomorrow. 'Nuf for today.
