Cluster removal article
Does anyone know the issue number and year of Corvette Enthusiast that contains the article written by John Hinckley regarding cluster removal? The link I found is a washed out copy and is very hard to read.

Not sure these are the links you have but part 1 is a bit washed out. I haven't seen a better link, but it should be readable.

Those are the articles I used to R&R the cluster in my '63 and they are excellent.

I found it.
From a JohnZ response last year:
"I like to use 1/4"-20 x 8" bolts, with the heads cut off, as supports while removing/installing the cluster (with the steering column removed). I wrote a two-part photo-illustrated step-by-step series of articles on removing/installing a C2 cluster in the July and September 2004 issues of "Corvette Enthusiast" magazine you might find helpful if you decide to do it yourself. Back issues can be ordered at 800-448-3611."

Can the weight of the cluster hanging 5-6" from the dash frame be supported at the dash's 5 anchor points? I attempted working on my cluster while it was supported by 6" bolts threaded thru the dash's 5 mounting holes. I became concerned by the sag and load stress at the mounting holes caused by the weight of the "hanging" cluster. So, I placed a sling around the cluster which I attached to a rod secured to my garage ceiling to transfer the weight from the cluster and the dash mounting holes.

If you put all-thread a decent distance in to the mounting holes and use all 5 mount points there are no issues...

Greetings everyone. I scanned Part 1 of JohnZ's excellent article on removing and refurbing the mid-year cluster. The attached PDF I believe is of better quality than the one in the links posted above. I have used the long bolt method with no problems. I cut the heads off of 8" bolts and rounded them off as studs so I could slide the cluster onto them.

I sent Dave Z's fresh scan to Barry, and he has posted it in place of the original (washed-out) version of the article; thanks, Dave!
