62 Fuelie intake manifold repair?
Hi guys. I am currently working on a 62 Fuel injected corvette that has a hole rotted into the passenger side rear cooling passage of the intake manifold. It is about the size of a pencil eraser.
I was wondering if this was a common problem with these cars and if they are repairable? If so, does anyone have any names of someone I could send the manifold to have it repaired?
I am new to these fuel injected cars so any leads or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Brian

Find a fab shot or machine shop in your area that does tig welding. They should be able to easily fix you manifold with no problem without warping it.
I wouldn't agree to machining the gasket surfaces after the welding unless it was absolutely necessary.
There is NO need to send your manifold to a "Corvette" specialist. You'll likely pay double if you do.

Now, to answer your question.
It is quite common to see corrosion at the 4 corners of alum intake manifolds. This is just one example of why it is important to flush and replace the coolant in the engine --------------------ESPECIALLY when an alum intake is on the engine.
A GOOD, EXPERIENCED welder who does alum welding can easily well up the damaged area. FIRST, it needs to be THOROUGHLY blasted to completely eliminate all corrosion (you may be surprised how much is still there). When I have had alum intakes welded, I prefer to grind and smooth down the welded area myself so that it is finished to MY satisfaction.

Thank you guys for your input. I am in northern NJ and have a few good fabricators in mind that I will get a hold of. I'm glad to hear it is a somewhat common problem and that they have been fixed before.
Thanks again,
Brian
