Default Question On Waxing and Fresh Paint 58 Corvette

Hello there......my 58 has just been freshly painted and chrome is in process of being reassembled back on the car. I should have it back home within the next week or so.

Question: How long before is waxed after being painted?

I posted some pics on the current progress.

I'd defer to your painter for guidance

As a general and I think safe rule at least 90 days, and I always waited six months for the hell of it.

Sorry, no suggestion for waxing but... wish to compliment the beautiful colour combination - your car looks gorgeous!

Thank you kindly Vernon...I now can't wait for this Canadian winter to come to a complete end. Anxious to get out for a drive soon.

If the painter used catalyzed paint and clear, it can be sanded (2 or 3000 grit) and buffed and waxed after 24 hours.

There are some clears that can be sanded and waxed after 4 hours.

As a mater of fact, if you wait over a week or so, it is so hard that sanding would be very difficult.

A little history on waxing newly painted cars.
There was a time that the painter would tell you to not wax it for 6 months.
This was so that you would not see any imperfections in the paint job while polishing.

( Don't ask me how I know this)

Pretty much what I've been told on modern two-stage paints...

Wile it's true that color sanding should be done within the first week or so, this car looks to have already been done, or doesn't need it anyway. if color sanding was in the program I doubt that the trim would be going back on now.
As to the paint. it's best to wait at least 6-8 weeks before waxing unless the paint was baked or heat cured. if not heat cured there are still solvents that need to escape the paint, and that takes time. waxing now would seal in the solvents and potentially cause adhesion issues down the road. better safe than sorry IMHO.

That hood looks like an accident waiting to happen. Get a hood support on there before you smash or loose your fingers.

I will agree with you that paint does "work" (/shrink) for a while after it has initially cured, however, if there is solvent in the paint film that works it's way out, I doubt that a layer of wax would stop it.

Ps, are you a painter?
Do you have any info, from a paint manf. to support your theory?
