Help? Air Conditioning AND REDLINE AT 6500?
I'm looking at a 1964 that shows the Tach redline at 6500
Car also appears, to have stock A/C..........R12 compressor and all.
What or is this possible?
If so what engine could this have been?
The engine in the 64 WAS replaced by GM in 1965 ...I would like to know what the original could have been, AND if it was replaced, then probably with what?
I realize it may be easier to install A/C rather than change out a tach.
So....confused here? You bet...............
The owner does not know how to decode............

AC was available on these engines, but I think you would want it off if you shift at 6500 RPM. The AC compressor had a bigger clutch on it to try and keep the AC compressor RPMs at a manageable level during spirited driving.
This same engine was available in 1965 as well………..so hopefully GM replaced it in kind.

Even though these engines would rev well over 7000 when new, the best advice I could give you is to limit your playdays to 6000 or under. Parts get old and tired.
You can tear it up if you want to.

Probably the 327/365 SHP solid lifter engine. The carburetor version of the SHP FI engine.

It has a carb and all but the seller is not up to decoding. It's just part of a collection of cars...........

The transmission is obviously a 4 speed (only) for this engine.

The 327/365 had a 6500 red line. A 327/365 could be had with a/c in 64. Its rare but it sounds correct.
Since they replaced the engine, I have no idea what that could be. You'd have to post some of the numbers.
BTW, its not easy to add a/c and do it factory correct. I doubt that was done. It is much easier to change the tach. Based on your information, I would say the car was originally a 327/365 with a/c.

Any guesses on what gear it MAY be with the engine A/C options?

I don't know of any gear restriction with a/c. If its still there, there should be a metal tag attached to the differential. The shape of the tags denotes the gear ratio. Its also stamped on top of the diff but can't be seen easily from under the car.

There have been a few recent threads on 64/65 365 Vettes with A/C. Can't remember the exact number but I thought they made only a couple hundred with that combination in 65, not sure about 64 but more than likely it was a low number. How's the rest of the car pan out? Get any pics?

I just bought one of these. Here is what I have learned and have no idea what is correct or not. All 64's have the same tach redline. FI motors could not be had with AC in 64. So not sure what you have found and nobody will ever know with the original engine gone.
Oh, they made 241 in 64 365hp AC cars.
Edit, the NCRS books says the FI and 365hp cars only had the 6500 tach?? But there is a newer book now.

more then likely if the engine was replaced under warranty only a long or short block would have been used. so the intake, carb and dist would have been used over from the original block

Look for a Holley 2818 with a 63 or 64 date.

64 with a 6500 red line tach would be equipped with a solid lifter engine....easily heard by its very noticable valve train noise....if its quiet, its not a high performance engine.........
And one of my toys has a L-72 engine against a T-400...as a footnote it is also a factory air car and a 4.1 gear.....if any question concerning performance doubts, they do work very successful with those option combinations.....

I'm learning reality is a lot different from rumors when you learn what is the truth.............
Thank you for your input as well............
