Default full resto on 66' 427

Thanks to everyone for their input on this project, I have decided to go back to stock , no flares, nassau blue paint and all, but i will be adding power steering, ( call me old ! ) however I need some help here, I have no idea what wheels it came with ? where can I find out what the proper plating is for the different components ie; suspension, driveline etc. and lastly ( not by a longshot ! ) any feedback on the numbers stamped in the block ( on the deck, passenger side , thanks again

If you want to know the correct finishes buy the NCRS judging manual. It will tell you all that, help decode, and more. And I must say they are some really ugly flairs on that car

Do you know any history on your Coupe? There are other stampings and raised characters to look for but the 'IM' suffix is correct if this is a 66 390 horse 427. I see a previous owner added a passenger side rear view mirror. On the stock wheels, unless your Coupe came with Knockoffs which were 6" wide, the stock steel wheels were 5.5" I believe. Not a totally definitive way to figure out the original wheels but check out the jack board cover behind the seats and look for the jacking instructions. They were different for the stock steel wheels than the knockoffs.

look at the support bar behind the dash, the vin number should match the numbers on the block.

You can see the vin and trim tags without removing the dash by looking under the glove box.

Default cool project.

Yes, if you are like me, and many others here, it will consume you. One thing leads to another..and another...and another. Soon you have a bare frame in front of you and boxes and boxes of (labeled) parts. Careful, you will need lots of storage room here and a good memory and/or a good stocking system so you can retrieve parts. Many parts are unique and expensive to replace. Take LOTS of pix. of your disassembly, the manuals are not that great. Your own photos will mean more to you. If you do not have a lot of patience, a project like this will teach you its value. I am currently restoring a 66 427. Going on two years. Hope to have it ready for Carlisle at the latest. Would like to be driving it sooner, if not, well that is what patience is all about.
Most of all Have fun. If you have issues. they are all discussed here.
Lots of folks with tremendous knowledge lurking, and information is happily shared.
My 66 project would not be where it is without the knowledge I have gained here and on the NCRS forum.
Oh, yea, the block stamping(IMO) looks good. The correct longitudinal machining marks are still visible. Others who are more well versed in stampings might disagree.

Congrats on the new project! As maligned as flares are, some folks still like them. If you remove them intact you may be able to sell them and recoup some $$.

Your engine IM code identifies a 427-390HP with K19 option - the Air Injection Reactor (smog) system, and those will be some FUN parts to find if you go that route

Going to need deep pockets to buy a correct Air Injection Reactor (smog) system for a 1966.

Also I thought my last 65 project had some ugly flairs, not so much looking at those.

Great project that will be a super nice car when you are done.

That's true but, if that's the original engine some of the 'important' K19 parts could still be on it. Carb, pump bracket, manifolds,

the air injection is gone and is has chrome headers/sidepipes, other than that it appears the engine is stock/original, it has been in one accident, minor front end, and hit a dog just before it was put away, it was the victim of a bad paint job and even worse attempt at installing flares !
going to start digging into more parts identifying this weekend, it was never raced, drag or otherwise, but it was driven hard !

Looks like the personalized plate has '66 Frog'? A friend of mine used to own a '66 Laguna Blue 390 horse Coupe and his old plate read 'Big Toad'

I would welcome some suggestions on books to buy , there are so many out there, meanwhile, can anyone shed some light on some of these parts and tell me if they are original ? Name: IMG_2841.jpg
