Default Fun time on dyno last Friday

I only finished rebuilding this car late last fall and its a 327 .030 over,, 10.35:1 SCR with a LT1 cam and intake with the stock 585 cfm Holley. The exhaust is 2 1/2" exhaust manifolds. The side exhaust is by Allen's and it's 3" OD with 2 1/2" ID. Timing is 16 initial, 38 in by 2,500 RPMs using stock distributor.

I had Friday off last week and the dyno shop had a last minute cancellation so I decided to do their baseline run. You get three pulls and if the carb needs any jetting its just shop rate labor if you do the work or they do. First pull is the blue color and you can see my A/F was pretty rich and the secondaries were late in opening. A quick change to 65 primaries and a lighter diaphragm spring for the secondaries and I made the red run and picked up almost 40hp and had a pretty even A/F curve.

Bottom line it was pretty fun and well worth the money to get the carb dialed in and I'm very happy with how the car runs.

Sweet....290 RWHP out of a 327 built like that is gettin' it done!

Any work to the heads?

That's a 12 sec car just as it sits!

Thanks Jim, the heads are just off the shelf Brodix IK180s. In hindsight I probably should have had some work done to improve them on the exhaust side.

Congrats Scott! You've got that 327 hummin'! 290 RWH ain't nuthin' to not be proud of. I too had similar #s (think are cars are almost clones...although yours sure is fresher/sharper in the paint department ).

That explains a lot...I'm sure they are helping things a good bit. I bet it's a fun one to run through the gears!

Scott, what pistons are you running and what is the chambers size on the heads? Were the manifolds ported? Thanks and a video would be great.

Nice job Scott! Should be fun to drive and YES, get yourself a 5 speed. You already modified the trans mount, didn't you?
Let's see some shots of your disguised heads, and dyno vids if you have any.
Believe it or not, a .030 over 327 that I'm familiar with makes 290 ft-lbs @ 2000 (at rear wheels) with 205cc heads and a 750 dual feed.
Best regards,
Joe C

Wow - if all you needed were a few quick carb parts swaps to get 'dialed in' after a major rebuild that's pretty impressive.

Scott - Great results. Are you using a stock #3810 Holley? They came with #65 primary jets stock I believe, what size did you have in them before dropping back to stock size? Also, which secondary spring did you go with, the long Yellow spring? What gears do you have in your roadster?

Mike, yes its a 3810 and I started out with 67s in primary. The spring we went to is a white one. The gears are 3.36 with a wide ratio Muncie and a 65 series tire which brings the effective ratio to about 3.55. I have the 3.55 Speedo gear and the GPS is 1mph off.
sorry no camera crew at the dyno shop, I was operating the car and the owner the dyno.

Nothing disguised, not sure where that came from, just Brodix heads with bolt holes in the ends.

Scott,
Was thinking of another friend who disguised his as double humps, like T.H. did above.
Sorry for the mixup.

Default Question About Dyno's

When jetting an engine when a car is on a dyno, do the dyno rollers exert roughly the same amount of load that the engine would experience if it was trying to move the weight of the vehicle and driver? Is there a load exerted on an engine dyno as well?

65tripleblack,

I resemble that remark LOL! Yup, I had a little "stealth" back in '07 using Dart Iron Eagle 180 runners and 1.6 Crane Gold Roller Rockers. To "disguise" my Eagle heads which had accessory holes in front, I filled 'em with Playdoh, yup Playdoh, I was a "serious" racer dontchaknow LOL! I then took refrigerator magnets, cut 'em in the shape of double humps and sprayed 'em Chevy orange. Had a blast with 'em.

Here's a pic of one of the heads with those Crane rockers and a somewhat front view showing the refrigerator magnet Chevy double hump in place.

Lastly, here's a link for all you wanting a video of a dyno I did a couple of years ago. This shows the tech getting out of her at 5,500 r's as she was leaning out. Still made 296 RWH at those r's. Now this dyno run is with stock '461 factory heads that have been "breathed on". Aside from using the stock heads, I'm using the '70 LT-1 cam, lifters and intake as well as the stock Holley 585 cfm carb like Scott is.

Scott, that 5 speed is the BEST! I get no compensation for endorsing it LOL! When you're just cruisin' and don't have your foot into it, slipping it into 5th gear at 45 mph she just rolls right along at 1,500 r's.

ENJOY!!

Jim

Hi Jim,
Lotto folks disguise the iron eagle heads. The guy I'm talking about went so far as to have the raised valve cover flanges cut down to the same height as those cast into the 461's.

Truthfully, I see no good reason to use a replacement 180 cc 23 degree wedge head because the double humps will make well over 400 flywheel HP when ported properly. Most replacement iron heads have the same chamber config as the fuelie heads, and that can be greatly improved upon with a kidney or heart shaped chamber. Well ported double humps will make more power than many new, small runner iron heads, including Vortecs. I can attest to that fact since my engine made 358 RWHP with 461's which I ported. It was extensive, and they safely opened up to 183 cc's. I did some special work to the chambers which I won't discuss here.

BIG aluminum heads bring the power well past 410 RWHP, with in INCREASE (not decrease) in torque across the board!
