Default Turn Signal Cancelling Cam

Happy 2014!
Ok - I've done my digging looking for info on the Turn Signal Cancelling mechanism. I'm still stumped.
The turn signal on my 1959 refuses to center thus the break light issue ensues. So I think my question is this.....
Are the turn signal cancelling cams replacement parts any good? Ecklers has one for $70. I'm sure there are others.

It seems I heard that the ones you buy aren't that great and you end up with the same issues you had before.
I don't know if the cam I have now is the original or a replacement. What I do know is a ton of time has been spend trying to get it to work and I'm still having the same issue.

Any suggestions or helpful hints are appreciated.

Thanks all
David

How are the cancel pins on your steering wheel?

Do you have two of them?

That might sound like a strange question but when I first got my car I spent a whole lot of time working on the cancel cam trying to get it to work, then I realized both of the pins in the steering wheel were missing.

I have exactly the same fault on my 59. The right hand turn signal cancels but doesn't return enough to make the brake light work. If I can't repair it I'll wait till I come over to Pismo car show in June and buy a few parts to bring back home.

David

I have attached the pages from the 1961 Passenger Shop Manual (S&M32) that the ST-12 (1953-1962 Corvette Servicing Guide) refers to for the signal lights. Also attached some info on the "innards" of the turn signal mechanism based on my 1960.

It sounds to simple but bending the leaf spring to add more tension some times fixes the problem as long as every thing else is not worn out.

Exactly right. I've done that trick on two C1s and it straightened out the "centering" problem...

In another car somebody had shimmed that leaf spring with another piece of metal to provide more tension.

Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. This weekend the weather is supposed to warm up a bit so I'll jump back into this puzzle.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again.

One other thought - my 1960 was doing the same thing. I reworked the mechanism and had the same "one brake light problem". I ended up replacing the electrical switch and it fixed it. My guess is that a newer switch has less friction than a older one and is able to cancel with less force - but whatever - it worked on my car.
