There are no numbers that tell you what engine it originally came with. You need to be familiar with subtle things like tach redline, exhaust manifolds, core supports, fender emblems, etc...
Remember, parts could have been replaced along the way, so detective work is in store.

The problem with core supports is they are often replaced over the years with a service replacement from a Chevy dealer, usually a "universal" one that has the hole for the Fuel Injection. That way, it could be used for both fuel and non-fuel cars. Unfortunately, some people get the impression this suggests the car originally came as a fuelie.
As Boyan says, its a totality of the details to guess what the original used to be, but a tach is less often replaced than some of the other parts.

From my understanding that is about all the narrowing down you can do without at least some original parts on the engine. There is nothing else that tells the engine HP. Just take a guess, I would go with 300HP.

If it's still there....
Wouldn't the 'sticker' on the back of the instrument cluster help him with HP?...

Cluster stickers, observations:
LA - 300 hp [65-67]
LB - 365 / 375 / 425 hp [65 – 67]
LC – 350 [65 – 67]
2006 CF thread
My tach redline list for C2s, should help:
C2 REDLINES:
63-66 327 - 250/300 5300
63-65 327 - 340/360/365/375 6500
65-67 327 - 350 6000 (early L79s may have 5300)
65 396 - 425 6500
66 427 - 390 5500
67 427 - 390/400 6000
427 - 425/435 6500
and then we have the oil pressure gauge, which also provides guidance:
Oil Pressure Gauge:
1963: All early cars= 60#, all later cars= 80# (all were SB's)
1964: All= 80#
1965: 365, 375, 425 HP cars= 80# (all solid lifter), the rest were 60#
1966: 425 HP BB= 80# with the balance being 60# (some disagreement exists)
1967: 430 and 435 HP BB= 80# with the balance being 60#
