Race Director
Here's to my uncle, Samuel W. Roberts II, navigator on a B-24, shot down in the first daylight raid over Berlin, 1944.

reserves
I was in the army reserves in the 60's. Later on I would tell friends, yes, I was in the service. They would say no you were not, you were just in the reserves. This was before the Iran wars. I don't see those so called friends anymore but if I did I would tell them do you think the reserves are not part of the military now, since many of them have given their life for this country.

Burning Brakes
You're welcome. I just wish I had heard a Thank You 42 years ago when I returned from my year on the rivers and canals of South Vietnam. -----------

I am remembering today:
My uncle who was taken off the farm in 1942 and made a bottom turret gunner on a B17 bomber (statistically an 18% survival rate) ....completed 25 bombing runs out of England, credited with shooting down 1.5 enemy planes, his own plane shot up badly once time and barely made it back to base, and 5 days after relief of duty his plane was shot down and all killed. He went on to pilot school and earned his wings.
My first cousin, served 4 years in the Marines, then joined the Army and became a Green Beret, on 2nd tour of duty in Vietnam became MIA 7/3/67, never found, many awards for heroism, name on the Great Wall.
My nephew, 19 years in the Marines, master sergeant (E8), two tours in Afghanistan/Iraq (while married with two children), and earned his BS degree while serving.
My son, a Captain in the Virginia National Guard, served as a convoy commander in Afghanistan/Iraq and came home unharmed after ******* IED's for 7 months.
Freedom is not cheap and I truly believe all young men should serve in the military. It surely gave me a better perspective on life.
I am into genealogy pretty deep and have lots of pictures. Here are some to make the point of sacrifice. The first four are of my uncle in WWII. The plane in flight was the actual one my uncle flew on.
Thanks for looking...Gary Seymour
And...my cousin on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

Thanks to all veterans past and present. Thanks for your bravery and self sacrifice so that others might live in peace and freedom. In your honor I took the M1 to the range and fired off a couple of clips in salute.
