grill color on 62?
It looks like it might have had a silver finish. Anybody know the correct color?
And let it be something I can get on a Sunday...my motor is waiting to get back in and Im WAY behind schedule!

perryth,
Mine is a "flat black". Easy to touch up with a spray can. Sure that others can tell you the exact paint needed.

Mine is black also.
I have seen several "original" type cars, and a friend has a Bloomington Survivor. Grills are black.

I know NOTHING of the fine points on 62's, but I seem to remember that there has been some controversy regarding Gold Anodized grilles in 62's as well as the more common flat black variety. I've never seen a silver grill in a 62. Chuck

'62 grilles were black-anodized aluminum; a decent replication of the original finish (if the anodizing has deteriorated) can be done with Krylon #1613 Semi-Flat, misted on lightly so it doesn't "flow out" wet.

What's the scoop with the so called "gold anodized" 62 grilles? Am I having a "senior moment"? Seems I recall some discussion about this. I also remember some discussion about gold vs. silver front and rear emblems. Chuck

Mid America's Performance Choice Black Anodize #4130 is your best bet for a factory-like finish, but Rustoleum Flat Black comes close at 1/4 the price.

Re: grill color on 62? (7vettes)
Chuck -
As I understand it, there was a small batch of gold-anodized '62 grilles made well before the model year started, as it had been planned to have some sort of Chevrolet "Golden Anniversary" version of the '62 Corvette. The grilles were allegedly shipped in advance to St. Louis, then the plans for the Golden Anniversary model were scrapped. Nobody seems to know for sure what happened to the gold grilles, but it's conceivable that when they surfaced from the back of a rack somewhere, they were used up on cars rather than scrapping them. Have no idea if this is true, or if it's an "urban legend".

Don't paint it yet. There is a guy that has a 62 that has a silver grill. Although it has led to considerable debate if it’s correct. He's sticking by it till proven wrong. You may be the missing link?

For the fellows who seem a little cynical about the "gold annodized" grill on a '62. It's a fact, for my car has or I should say "had" one. I didn't realize this fact until now. I decide to do a front face lift, so, I installed a new center bar and decided to paint the grill the so-called "original flat black". I have pictures of the "gold" grille and the fellow who sold me the car will confirm this, also. I believe, if you check with "Vette" magazine, that they will also confirm this, since they did a feature on this car for the March 1987 issue. If anyone is interested in seeing the original picture, send a reply to karlcless@hotmail.com and I'll e-mail a digital copy.

Re: grill color on 62? (perryth)
I bought both brand new, 61 silver, 62 black and no golds. I have seen one duce with a gold grill and he claimed it was a very rare car. I figured he was right because none were produced. Big deal so he has one of none. Who would care. I have Dayton knock-offs on mine, available through Dayton Wire Wheel. Anybody care? No! Black in 62, Silver in 61. I believe that there is no longer blacks available only silver grills. You have to use a 61 silver and paint it flat black in a 62. :chevy

Re: grill color on 62? (Kevs67)
I have no problem with that, mine is anodized except I understand that original 62 grills are obsolete and that only the silver was available. So it could be placed in either 61`s or 62`s, the fit was correct only the color was wrong for 62. :)

You guys have caught my interest with this thread. I can only add to what has been said based on my own experience. My 62 is unrestored. My cousin (we're like brothers and still business partners) ordered it and took delivery 6/27/62. I purchased it from him in April 1969. No one else has ever owned the car and it is unmodified. It is # 12872. My grille is and always has been gold/unpainted. I guess almost all other 62's from what I'm hearing have black grilles. I'm convinced that they're both original and am interested in any info others might have as to why some cars have the different (anodized aluminum / gold) instead of black.

Re: grill color on 62? (jpanda)
Corvette was to be the Golden Anniversary car, they made up gold grills and delivered them to the plant. GM decided that the Impala should become the Golden Anniversary car, Politics.... Near the end of the year when black grills were running low and the new 63 was coming on line they grabbed them in no particular order or color or options and used them. I don't know how many or if any, 62's were produced with the gold grille. Could be the reason you guys with gold grill have later number cars. :chevy :chevy
