idler pulley
I'm putting a new water pump on my '65 327/365, and I'm wondering if there's a reason to re-install the idler pulley on a car that has no power accessories . Any ideas?

On the other hand, if you don't want some of yer Corvette buddies pointing out to you that you're missing something, put it back on.
Original purpose was to keep the water pump turning in case you threw a fan belt in competition.

The idler pulley is present so you can easily adjust the tension on the 2nd belt. If you believe you don't need the redundant water pump belt, then you don't need the idler pulley.
I happen to like the concept of a redundant water pump belt. As a result, I added an idler pulley and the dual, deep groove pulleys to my '60.

Exactly why I am not a fan of serpentine belts. They will leave you stranded. You can drive a long way if you still have a water pump.

Idler pulley
Thanks guys, at least I know what it was originally designed for. Don't know if I will put it back on or not - really depends on how it looks with all the new parts.

this is how you eliminate the idler pulley, i ran it this way for MANY years and many other people do the same thing... . i'm sorry i don't know the belt # but you can figure it out by getting an old belt you can cut so that you can determine the right length and then get that length plus one size each side of it to see which one fits, keep trying till you find the right one OR someone else can tell you the right belt the first time... if you don't mess up the belt or the sleeve you can take the non fitting belts back.

the idler pulley & belt (and deep groove pulleys) was intended as a backup on the HP engine in case you tossed the alt/water pump belt. if you 'behave' yourself, chances are you'd never need it...
i always thought the extra belt looked but you can't use the idler if you have aftermarket power steering as the pump bracket mounts to those bosses (at least mine does...)

If you had factory PS, the factory PS pump served the same purpose as the idler.
