It's not true.
The 396 (and L88) radiator visually resembles a small block radiator but it is actually about 2" or so wider.

No. The 65 396 used it's own unique radiator, support and shroud.
The radiator looked similar to the small block, but the upper water outlet is positioned differently and the radiator had increased cooling capacity (it's larger). It was the same radiator that was later used for the 67-69 L-88's and the 70-72 ZR-1's.
There were actually 2 different 65 big block radiators. The very early radiators used the small block upper neck, but the radiator itself, was different than the small block one. Shortly after 396 production began, the upper neck was changed to one unique to the 396's. All three radiators, carried different part numbers.
The small block shroud was metal, while the 396 used a black fiberglass one.
The big block core support has a larger and different shaped opening in it, for the radiator. The easiest way to identify a big block vs small block support, is from the top of the opening. The big block is curved across the top, while the small blocks are straight across. The 67 L-88, also used the 65 396 support.
