Default 66 vent window crank

Why is there a gap between the door panel and the vent window crank on my 66 coupe? It seems like something may be missing. The lower crank for the window has a spacer but I can't see that the vent window had a spacer originally. Is there supposed to be something between the door and the inside of the panel to "push" the panel out to take up that gap?

Default Vent window crank gap

If you have repro vent window cranks the problem is that the overseas sources for these cranks are machining the slots that hold the horseshoe shaped spring clip so that the crank is held out too far . Hold a repro and an original part side by side to see the obvious difference. The trouble is that it is very difficult to find an original without the typical pitting. The repro cranks are inexpensive and made nicely other than the machined slots. The fix for this problem is to fill the slots with JB weld and then carefully use a hack saw blade to cut in new slots where they should be. Use masking tap to protect the finish while cutting. Place a rod inside the mounting hole to keep the epoxy from filling the hole.
