62 vette cabin heater

62 vette cabin heater
I recently installed a new heater core in our 62 vette. The 50 year old core began leaking. I am not sure the heater is working properly. In 40 degree ambient temperature at 70 mph the heater output temperature is cool. With car setting in 60 degree garage the output temperature is very warm. Both heater hoses are very warm, to hot, to the touch. Engine has 180 degree thermostat and the temperature gauge reads about that at driving speed. The temperature control valve is just 3 years old. It was replaced during restoration. The valve linkage travels to fully open position with cable control. I can see that the ambient air travels thru the heater core thru an approximately 4" tubing attached at the radiator cowl, in other words, the heater core sees the outside temperature at speed. There is not a cabin air recirculate option. I don't drive the car much in winter therefore I cannot remember what the temperature output was the last winter I drove it with the old heater core. Sooo, the question is how does your C1 heater perform in cole weather?

The heater in my '62 puts out tons of heat.
I have driven it in 40 deg weather and colder with both the hardtop, or the airtight soft top (sarcasm on), in both cases I have to turn down the heat once the car warms up or it became unbearable.
Are you getting good airflow out of the ducts (heat or def)? If the car is parked outside in 40 deg weather with the engine at 180 and the heater on full hot and fan at max, what are you getting?

Ditto with corvette-62 on my 60. Even when driven when the temp was 30. By any stretch I am not saying it was not drafty with only a soft top.
In-fact I had to make a heat damn to keep most of the heat off my legs and send it over to my wifes side because she like it warmer.

As others have said the heaters in the late C1s rock. I have to run mine with the AIR/TEMP controls about 1/2 way out. Anymore than that and I'll roast my toes.
You definitely have something amiss. If the heat blows cool at speed and hot when sitting still I would be suspicious about air and/or water flow. If enough cool air is entering the cabin at speed it'll sure take the temps down fast....if the hot water isn't flowing properly (heater control valve or even water pump) at speed, again, you might not get the heat.

If I need extra heat, I just pull up the shifter boot and get a bunch from the drive shaft tunnel.
Your heating issues, thought you don't mention how if you are getting a significant airflow from the heater duct, I used to live in Montana, where outside was minus zero to as low as -40F, and I was lucky to get the inside of the car to just above freezing, may have to do more with weatherstrip issues and other draftiness/heat loss problems, sometimes the air flow from the heater plenum wasn't so great.
Frank, saying he never has a problem with the heater, in FL, cracks me up.

We had a week of +20* temps a few years back here in Orlando - lost a few thousand bucks of tropical landscaping but did drive the vette twice during that cold spell and heater worked superbly. It ain't always wingtip shoes, white socks and shorts time down here!
I have been in -20* in Yellowstone with 4 friends in a rental car....we took turns using the ice scraper to scrape the INSIDE of the windows as we drove along - never again.

You mentioned the heater core always seeing outside air through the
4" duct at highway speed, this is only true if you don't have a fresh air vent door or if it is always open.
I have seen the heater hose fitting on the intake manifold get nearly plugged due to rust, stop leak etc., might be worth a check.
You may also want to disconnect the hoses and hook the inlet side to a water hose and run fresh water through the heater core to check the flow and the function of the heater control valve.

Thanks for the input. I am reassured the heater does perform well if all is right. I did check for correct plumbing. I think I will start with checking the flow with the water hose. I am concerned residue silicone sealer from past hose installation may have gotten into the control valve when I recently installed a new heater core.

Silicone sealer for hoses ?
Never used it.
