Default 62 Engine out. Pics!

Well it took a few days longer than I thought but it is out. I decided to pull the transmission first since the car is on blocks and I didn't have enough room in the front of the car to pull them together. It all went without a hitch. I will post pics as I go along and welcome all comments on what looks right and what doesn't. It sure appears to be the original motor although I have only owned the car since 2005. I know you guys will be able to see things in the pictures that I don't know so have at it.

Block date is sept. 28, 1961 which is good since my car was built about the 10th of October. I have posted my stamp pad before here, but will do so again when I get another picture. Heads are both dated sept. 11, 1961.

First question I have is whether this looks like the bigger oil pan?

Looks to me like you have the standard 4 quart (5 with filter) oil pan. The sump for the SHP small blocks is longer (rear to front). I believe the SHP pan (5 quarts, 6 with filter) did not come out until '64, but I could be wrong.

C1's all used the same capacity 3-step oil pan; the only differences were internal baffling.

Was that a 4 or 5 qt pan? I thought they were the larger 5 qt.

Surprised to see your fuel pump still on the engine. On the check list I use for pulling the engine one of the very first instructions is "remove fuel pump". Was your hoist long enough to go in from the front or did you have to go in from the side ? Good work. Bob

No need to remove the fuel pump as it will easily clear the a-arms...

The "big" (6-quart system, 5-quart sump) pan, used with solid lifters, didn't start until 1963, and it was a 2-step pan with a rear plug.

Thanks guys. Kevin, will snap you a pic tomorrow. Claf and Hitch, I did remove the passenger motor mount bracket just in case there was interference with the fuel pump but I agree there was plenty of wiggle room, especially since I didn't have the tranny attached.

JohnZ, thanks as well. I am going to oull the oil pan and see if it is baffled and trap doored. If not, should I buy a pan that is for this build?

Looks great, Thanks for the pictures, I'm right behind you. I've got my new motor build and my Dewitt radiator came in today. Maybe in a week I can start pulling mine. Thanks again
