Thinking about trading my 56 Vette...
...for a nice C5. It is getting harder to work on the 56, which is a running and driving car, just needs restoration. It would make my life less complicated. Seems like there are plentry of nice C5s out there.
I prefer the C5 to the C6.
Thoughts on trading vs. selling outright? Tax situation is easier with a trade.
Here is the car I am talking about...

I once made a mistake selling my (original owner) 1969 427 to buy a 2002 C5 conv. and regreted that decision almost immediately. I then went on to purchase a new 2004 Z06 followed by a 2004 Z16 and then a 2007 C6 Z51 ------ all FABULOUS Corvettes, but, I was not happy, so I went significantly backwards in model years and purchased a beautiful 1966 L72.
I"m HAPPY AGAIN !!!
Only you can make that decision, however C5 or C6 Corvettes are a "dime a dozen" compared to 1956 classic Corvette. Park a 56 next to any C5 at a car show and observe who looks what!
That's my two cents!
Good luck with your decision,
Ralph

I went from a restored 66 L79 AC convertible to a 09 Z06, then a 10 ZR1 - fast, fun cars, but you cannot work on them and they depreciate very fast - sold my ZR1 and now seriously looking for another midyear to enjoy and when I open the hood I can identify the parts!
So, my two cents is keep your 56 and buy a C5 - there are great deals out there (my personal opinion is get a C6 - much better all around cars for the money!)
Good luck with your decision!

If a C5 is what you've been wanting, that's what you should get. They're great cars, if they've not been abused. You should be able to get a nice one for what your '56 appears to be worth.. whether you sell it or trade. Your car would sell pretty easily.
Do you have a year or model of C5 that you have in mind?

What is that car worth?
C5s are getting cheap whole bunch of pampered ones out there ready to have fun with for not a whole lot.
Sometimes no wind noise and a heater is nice.

It would be nice to have all of the information on the '56. Interesting that it's apparently being used complete with trim and no paint. I may be old and eccentric, but I think that's cool.

Shoot id block it shoot some charcoal primer on it drop it a touch little more rear rubber modded motor and drive that thing everywhere even to work
Tired of having paint jobs I gotta worry about. Doesnt keep me off the road just seems like a waste of money. Let my Zr1 sit in the garage for awhile after I had it painted to perfection just too busy.
After 3 mos a rat got in there knocked a can of spray paint off the shelf and chipped the paint good so why not have the fun and get scars anyway!!!

Don't do it, you will be sorry. Just park your car for awhile, perhaps a year or so, and you will be in love again. I just had a guy bring me a 1200 mile 2013 black, grand sport, vert, tripple black, had 15k in options, 3 LT, the sticker was 75K....he hated it, wanted to know what I would give him for it. I called every Chev dealer for a buy bid, every exotic store, no one would even touch it. I told the guy to put it in his garage until spring.....

From what I remember reading about your past posts on the '56, it's worth way more than a C5, don't set your bar too low if that's what you want.
I built a '69, went without for a while, bought an excellent new 2009, and I can tell you the old Corvette itch is a different itch. Capital is CHEAP right now, and C5's have already suffered most of their depreciation. Go buy one, finance it if you wish for nearly nothing, drive it a year or two. If you no longer drive the '56 THEN let it go, if you find you miss it, walk out to the garage and smile.

Keep your 56, and wait to buy a C5 until after the C7s' start appearing on the road. C6s' will drop in value along with C5s'.
I think you'd be able to get a much better deal, and keep your 56 if you really would like to.

Get a C5 Z06. any color other than black. Otherwise you will regret having to spend more time cleaning it than driving it. You definitely don't have that problem now. Just make sure it doesn't have old hard tires, things can get real exciting, particularly if it's cold......
Oh yeah, keep the 56....

As you all can tell, I am struggling with this.
I have always wanted a 57 Vette, never owned one. This is my third 56Vette, all three of them were / are project cars.
I wish this car wasn't so original, or so complete. I wouldn't feel bad about chopping it up then.
The "value" is somewhere between $25 and $30 K. I have a LOT of original parts with this car.

Don't do it. I have had C5s and C6s, and they are immensely capable cars (though I personally prefer a C6 over a C5). Neither is a substitute for any 53-67 Corvette. I made a mistake of selling my 67 L-79 air coupe for a 2002 Z06 and was unhappy. So I bought a 67 L-68 and a 2006 2LT coupe. I since sold the L-68 and got a L-71. Also sold the 2006 and buying a 2013 next month.
Best of all worlds is a C6 and a vintage Corvette simultaneously--but if you can only have one, a classic is the only choice.

Assuming that you're not being facitious......Keep your C1 and buy a C5 Z06 TOO. Right now they are dirt cheap (less than 25,000 for a perfect one, or less than $20,000 for a higher mileage one). They are "bullet proof", stone ax reliable and will put a smile on your face every time you drive it. Just DON'T sell you old one...you will regret it.

I agree with most others and their responses. DON'T DO IT!!! I had a 99 C5 convertible which was a decent car, lots of power, but I quickly got tired of the "electrical gremlins" which seem to haunt many of these. Not to mention the fact that the only service I could do was change the fluids. I must have had temporary insanity strike again when I bought a new C6 in 2005 - it too was fine while still under warranty. After the warranty was up, you guessed it - all kinds of little problems, from rattles to getting the tranny stuck in park (something my wife never forgot about). Awesome performer, but again, I could not work on it, and I finally sold it. I still have my 57, and even though it gives me fits at times, I have no intention of selling it!

A good friend bought a beautiful 2000 C5 about 3 months ago. Car has 35K miles, and was garage kept, well maintained, and does not have a scratch on it. Since his purchase, the drivers seat has started rocking back and forth(common problem), also its memory function only works when it wants to. The cruise control works intermittently. The oil pressure gauge now reads max, and the display reads something like 180 psi.( common problem also), requiring the removal of the intake manifold to replace the crappy Mexican sending unit. Keep the 56.
