What backup parts do you carry in your car?
As a new owner of one of these old cars, and reading the other thread about coils failing, I'm curious. Does anyone carry an extra coil in their car? What other replacement parts that are small enough to carry along and easy enough to effect a simple roadside repair.
Right now all I carry is a cell phone and my AAA Plus card <LOL>.

That is about all you need. Most anything else you might wind up needing can be purchased at any 7 day a week Auto Zone or other parts place.
If you want to run yourself nuts packing in all those spare parts and the tools to change them, go ahead!

Also carry points and condenser even though for 10 plus years I've had the Ignitor I in place with no problems. I carry a quart of oil and some Fix-A-Flat as well as a small air compressor and a small tire plugging kit. A roll of duct tape, wire and some paper towels and a 100 piece socket, wrench and screw driver kit. The coil is the only part I've ever needed along with the tool kit a few times. Also carry my Gold AAA card which has been handy two times. Once recently when a new fuel pump crapped out after 2000 miles. The other was the first day I owned the car and it broke down driving 100 miles to it's new home.

I have a small tool kit, cell phone, AAA card and 3 Visa cards and so far I have not had to use any of them (knock on wood ) and hope I never have to but with these old cars you never know.

After this last week end I think about 20 ft of 1 or 2 inch cargo or tow stap. My car died on the road before I could make it to an exit off the boulevard. It was a relief when someone came by with an old piece of 1 inch cargo starp and offered to pull be to the next exit. I was worried it wouldn't pull the car up a moderate hill but it did. First time I've had to use my collector car tow insurance. It was a long 45 minute wait but I was glad to get it home.

I have to agree with Mike - I've been at both extremes. I now carry an extra set of points, an extra set of plugs and a jumper wire to bypass the ignition switch in case I ever have to 'hot wire' the '61 to get home. That, 4 basic hand wrenches, jumper cables, some screwdrivers, road flares and Fix-A-Flat constitute my 'road warrior' ditch bag.

All I carry is what I carry in any car. Just my wallet and cell phone.

Drifting
Set of points, condenser if engine starts to run rough. A book of matches to set the points. A screw driver with an assortment of tips,a few wrenches. Then a cell if needed.

It is just a matter of time before those that pack everything but the kitchen sink as far as spare parts and tools to pop over the ridge!
They are waiting in the wings for the tide to subside against bringing half the garage with them when they leave home!

Depends on the length of the trip
Because I carry no spare tire, I actually carry innertubes for my tire sizes in case a puncture I can't patch or you get a rip in the sidewall. If one completely blows apart, then I will have to find a tire of any size that might fit my rims (and 15" in 10 inch are not readily available at gas stations in this day and age). I also carry a complete (pre-set up) point type distributor, because I have MSD boxes etc. and a mag pickup distributor, thus throw in the entire unit and away I go. On the side of the road is not a good place to try to set points etc. (my opinion, it is quicker to just change out the whole thing to a known running unit), a coil and coil lead wire, a fuel pump (electric to match), belts, water pump, starter, an array of holley goodies and all gaskets, etc. , along with various tape, patching epoxy, JB weld, extra wire, etc. tools, jumper cables, etc. and a few more things like extra heim joints because my complete suspensions are heims, a ball joint etc. etc..
PS those boxes behind the seat are for parts to be carried!!!!!!!!
