62 fuel injection unit complete value?
I found a 1962 Corvette Fuel Injection Unit for sale, complete with original air breather system, etc..... The serial #2703 with a part # 7017360! On the plate that the part number is, there looks like after the 4th debit (7) a small impression of a 0 was made and the last digit 0 is off centered! The unit definitely needs rebuilt. The asking price is $5,000.00. The unit is out of Pennsylvania. Allegedly there are no known cracks int he unit. By the way I have a 62 original fuelie that is missing the fuel injection system, I'm trying to replace. My thoughts would be to buy the unit and send it off to Jack Podell and have the unit went through....any suggestions or questions I need to be asking the seller. Thanks for any input...

I would await the input of the more knowledgable Forum members (like Jerry Bramlett, Tom Parsons, etc) BUT, I would say that is a good deal IF all of the parts are there Distributor, S tube, Air Cleaner, etc), AND the unit functions properly on a running engine.

My thoughts are that the price is about the asking prices especially with the air cleaner assy. I prefer Chuck Smith over Podell.
And complete will include the correct distributor.

62 fuelie set up...
Sorry no distributor but I have the correct distributor....seller isn't sure the last time it was on a car. It had belonged to his father who reportedly had purchased the system to put on a non original 62 fuelie.

There are also a few rebuilders out there who couldn't understand the working principles of an anvil. And they are well capable of screwing one up.

Safety Car
Is it possible to post photos of the unit with detailed up close pictures of the intake corners (they always break when over tightened). Also up close of the fuel meter, choke assembly, copper ''spider'' lines, and the four nozzle blocks, as they also break when over tightened. Also the ''air meter'' , and AIR CLEANER. Be sure to see the inside of the air cleaner. Many little $500 parts may be needed. Where do you live?
Generally, these units sit in someone's nice garage, but many times thery are stored in a leaky trunk full of water and arfe badly damaged and will be hard to use for parts, much less on a running car.

First off thanks for all your comments, I've always weighted heavily on your comments! I don't have any photos but the best i can ask is if you don't mind check on EBAY, pull up item #300831879186. Should have a picture of the air breather unit with heading "Complete FI Fuel Injection for 62 Corvette....." Let me know what you think! Thank you Roy

The pictures really don't show enough detail of the FI unit to form an opinion.
And the seller doesn't seem to know enough to realize he shouldn't be setting the unit down on the nozzles.

There are several honest, competent rebuilders "out there" and their reputations reflect their capability. Ask around.

As Jim mentioned above, it's difficult to form a firm opinion from the pictures. BUT, what I'm seeing is a complete 62 unit, minus distributor. Although, distributors are out there.
There are a LOT of excellent parts with the unit. If I were in the market for a complete 62 unit, I'd try to buy it if the price was right.
Keep in mind, AFTER the purchase price, there will be the additional price of a quality rebuild!!! Probably a range of $1800-2500.

FI Serial Numbers
Therre is information that can put the original FI unit "in the ball park". Mostly based on known original cars and also based on "high serial numbers are not correct on low serial number cars".
I have some data on the cars between 1500 and 10000 that may help.
Unfortunatly some of the FI people know more than they are willing to publish.

62 fuel injection unit
The asking price seams to be in the norm but if I cain't get someone to verify the product prior to purchase, I'll probably pass! I don't like surprises especially when your talking about the dollar amount in question! There are still a few of these complete units floating around that has been rebuilt and tested by knowledgeable rebuilders. Thanks for your help, i'm in no big hurry to find this unit for my car, when the right one comes along, i'll buy it! Thanks again
