How much torque on the pinion bearings
I've removed the rear end unit from my 62. It is a peg leg unit. The front pinion flange does not turn freely by hand. Is that because there is torque on the pinion bearings making it snug to turn. If so how hard should it be to turn.

You do not use torque on the pinion bearings, you use preload which is measured in inch pounds. This can only be set with the carrier removed from the center section and only the pinion left installed.
If I remember correctly it is 15 in. lbs. for new and about 5-8 in. lbs. for used bearings.
