Tire size used in the spredsheet was 26.5, I checked and a 27.5 inch tire reduced RPM by 100 in 4th gear. 1:1

Default 4:11 rear

When I bought my '66 big block it had a 4:11 in it. I drove it for about a year before I went to a 3:36 and a wide ratio 4-speed. I really liked the 4:11 in town but I didn't like the revs on the hiway. With the 3:36 I drive around town in 3rd gear and get lower revs on the hiway and my mileage improved slightly. Keep the 4:11 and drop in a 5-sp.od.

I have a 3.70 rear and dont like it about 85% of the time. Much prefer a 3.36 or 3.21. mainly because i dont use acceleration that way, the engine noise and even with it being a hobby vehicle my conscience about the gas milage and having to drive from one station to the next that has hi octane. no fun really. hard to ply it cool filling up twice a day just to putz around the town.

And there are several things that could be holding it back, especially at low rpm.
I agree, I can do this with a 3.08 rear----------------------and it's not even a BB!

On my 4.11 setup 80 mph equals 4000 rpm. Add in 2 1/2" long tube headers and 4" collectors and you've got a real symphony on your hands (and ears). It's great in the city getting that BB off and running. I also get about10 mpg on the highway, another fact to consider.

The 3:70's are great now and yes the BB has plenty of power. The tires do spin through the gears. I was just thinking of maybe dropping in a 4:11 for some summer fun. But I'm thinking maybe the 3:70's should stay? Plus as I'm running a m-20 Its like I almost have the 4:11's in it already. Just another thing to think about. What are the 4:11's gonna equate to with a m20 ratio 1st-3rd gear?

Running 80 mph for hours on 4.11 didnt know better on highway, sounds just like a small airplane. Enjoyed and not tired (when I was 35) Original engine (100,000 miles) no oil burniing, Plenty of original power. Reallypuills! Regards,Abe G

Default 4:11 rear end w Tremic 600

With the OD, on the highway is great, cruise at 75 to 80 all day,
In town, 1st and 2nd aren't as well matched but once you hit 50 mph on the highway it's very drivable

I have always believed that the 3.70 rear coupled with a close ratio transmission was the most usable combination offered by the factory. Doesn't anyone have good to say about the 4.56? It sure is fun in local driving.

Default 411 rears against 370 on BBcorvette

I have had a 411 rear in my 63 swc since 1962 (about 100000 miles) with my small bock 340 hp. I have had NO problems with the rear or tires. I also have gone over 80 mph for hours on past 3-4 hour trips. I didnt know that corvettes were ment to sound like small airpanes, so blissfully drove on.However,I think that a 370 on a BB is about right. The extra power on a properly tuned engine BB should be more than adequate with a 370 to do what you want to. Good luck, regards,Abe G

My 435 has 4:11's, around town it's a blast but after about an hour on the highway I wish I had 3:70's

My L78 loves the 411 and so do I
The 2 hour trip to Carlisle this year really makes me want that SS700 tho
I didn't mind the engine roar at all, who needs to hear the radio anyway?
But that damn shifter rattle.......

Any thoughts on how that new trans will play out with the 411?

Mark,

I thank you for the spread sheet, but have a gripe: The 1st gear rpm for the MY6 is shown higher for the 3.35 rear than the 3.70 (both at 30 mph).

I did not check other cells, but it does cause issues with "trust"........

Also, I will expand upon it with a 3.55 rear, since that is a popular rear gear. Plus adding tire diameter option, since that does vary.

The perfect combo IMO for all around pleasure driving at highway speeds and you can still chirp the tires in the first three gears.
This is what my '61 has

Hey,

I'll "3rd" it on the 5 speed OD. I'm a newbie to this OD, but just the 160 miles I've logged on her with my 3.73:1 rear gears really makes for a flexible driving experience.

Here's my my analysis of the % of drop with the SS700 Close Ratio gears I ended up with:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...nsmission.html

With my 327, solid lifter she spins up pretty quick. The gearing I chose feels right. Not looking back. The original M20 is mothballed along with the original block and original rear end (3.36:1).

Default 4:11

I have a 59 283 with two Carters. I like my 4:11 and keep it at 50-55. Most people pass me and understand that the car is to be enjoyed at a slower speed. 50 navy

I feel sorry for those of you that can still use a clutch yet want to have your cake and eat it too...: A few more cakes and you may just to be able to do it, with and auto.

I went with a TCI 6X 6sp automatic and a 3.54 rear gear. My 4th gear ratio is 4.18, good for up to 135 MPH before it shifts into 5th at 6600 RPM which is 1:1.

In 6th gear 70 MPH is 2125 rpms, and thats find for the area of S.E. I live in. It's rolling hills here and 0.68 OD in 6L80E C6 2008 vette is constancly shifting in and out of 6th to 5th or even 4th and back as engine management want let you lug engine protecting it.

TCI 6X (4L80E based)
2.97
2.23 -- 76.10% (high) RPM Retention -- 23.90% RPM DROP
1.57 -- 70.40% (high) RPM Retention -- 29.60% RPM DROP
1.18 -- 75.16% (high) RPM Retention -- 24.84% RPM DROP
1.00 -- 84.745% (high) RPM Retention -- 15.255% RPM DROP
0.75 -- 75.00% (high) RPM Retention -- 25.00% RPM DROP

For 1st gear comparison of 6X to Muncie standard ratio and close ratio trans to get you out of the hole.

6X 1st gear: 2.97 x 3.54 = 10.51

Std 1st gear: 2.52 x 4.11 = 10.36

C.R 1st gear: 2.20 x 4.11 = 9.04

4 gear at 6500 RPM with a 28.7 dia tire I'm running produces the below top speed in 4th gear between 6X with 1.18 4th gear with 3.54 rear gear and 4 sp with 1:1 ratio and 4.11 rear for comparsion. Since 6X has a 1:1 5th gear, it's top speed in a non OD gear to help the engine rev faster is 157 MPH.

4 sp manual with 1:1 4th gear and 4:11 rear gear = 135 MPH at 6500 RPM

TCI 6x with 1.18 4th gear and 3.54 rear gear = 133 MPH at 6500 RPM

Love it.
