Default '65 Holley to Edelbrock Carb Conversion

Hi all.... I have a 1965 327/350 hp with the stock Holley carb and frankly I am really getting fed up with the fuel leaks from all sorts of locations from the Holley. The latest leak is from the fuel supply banjo fitting on the front float bowl. I have looked at the Edelbrock Performer carb, 600 cfm, with the electric choke. I would like to use my stock '65 air cleaner. It appears to me that the breather tube is going to foul the Edelbrock carb body.

Has anyone converted their '65 350 or 365 hp engine from the Holley to the Edelbrock carb?

Alternatively any suggestions for getting the banjo fitting to seal without stripping the threads in the front bowl?

Thanks

LOTS of detail things won't fit up with the Edelbrock carb (including your air cleaner, PCV, choke system, fuel inlet, vacuum advance line, etc.) and will require Bubba work; it's a simple job to rebuild that 2818-1 Holley (with Hollley parts).

This is a very bad idea. Just have the Holley rebuilt by someone who know what they are doing and it will be fine. If you insist on proceeding [which happens all too often] I hope that you will be wise enough to save all of the parts you remove so the next owner will happy no doubt to quickly put it back on the car.

Ham fisted tinkerer's have killed a lot of Holleys. If you have to overtorque anything on a Holley to seal a fitting or joint, you have a warped part or a bad gasket.

There's always the possibility of buying a new replacement Holley that hasn't been messed with to fix your problem.

I wouldn't go the AFB or Edelbrock route for reasons already mentioned.

I second this. I'm not one to slam Edelbrock or Carter carbs as they are fine carburetors for their own applications. But in this case you are better off having the Holley "restored" by a professional. This is far different than giving it to your favorite old mechanic to have a rebuild kit thrown in it. Send it to Holley to restore or some of the others - Bob Krutz I believe is (was?) another. I had my carb restored by Holley 20 years ago and except they put stock jets back in and I had to put my staggered jetting back, I haven't touched it since.

Well, I guess I have a new name...you can call me Bubba! Having used two Edelbrock carbs over the last 25 years and doing ALL of my own work on my car has allowed me to drive it over 100k miles and be rewarded with 4 Celebrity Picks at Carlisle, just reinforces the new name Bubba! By the way my car is NCRS..Not Correctly Restored Stingray
If you take your time, pay attention to detail, understand the principals of it's operation you can have a very clean install with a very reliable carb. Enjoy the ride! Dennis

Holley I think still refurbishes those. If not call Jeff at AED performance it will be perfect, bench tested etc.

I would have the carb rebuilt, there is nothing wrong with the Edelbrock carb. however as John Z stated there are several components unique to the 65/L79/L76 that will no longer operate as intended.

Oh hell, just go with EFI at this point! Although it is more expensive, a Holley Sniper requires significantly less modifications at the engine end. In fact, everything will bolt right up. Now, the fuel tank end is a whole different story.

I’m not really serious, but I don’t consider an Edelbrock an upgrade to a Holley particularly if you have other performance upgrades. They are more sensitive to transition with low vacuum than a Holley and much more sensitive to higher fuel pressures, unable to tolerate much over 5 psi of fuel pressure without flooding. Be careful!

OP inquiry was 7 years ago. Only made one post and that was back then. Somebody check his garage and make sure he's not trapped under his car.

Probably the sneaky "Related Threads" listings at the bottom of the threads. It's probably good if you are searching a topic, otherwise it causes bizarre posts like this.

After messing with hundreds of carbs I can say that the Edelbrock will be down on power compared to a well prepared holley. I have had the best luck with Quick fuel Brawler series carb like a holley just better
