Vanacor's Corvette
Just got a good price on a hood for my 60 from Vanacor's Corvette ($425.00 US) but they tell me it's hand laid but it has a smooth finish underneath (unlike other hand laid hoods ??)
Anyone here have any experience with this vendor and any knowledge of their C1 "hand laid" hoods ?
Thanks

You can go to "Search" and look for Vanacors under archived topics, there are a dozen or more posts to be found. Most of them came from the C3, C4 & C5 Forums.

I don't think too many people would go hand laid. I can't help you with that one. You will save a couple hundred buck buying a hand layed hood. If I was going to put a hand laid hood on my '60, I would buy the cheapest one I could find.

Re: Vanacor's Corvette (USAZR1)
"My experience with handlaid fiberglass is that it can be very high quality."
That is true. Some of the hand laid fiberglass is about the best you can get, but we are talking about a hood. I had a hand laid one on my car when I bought it and when I opened the hood it looked like crap. I think for a hood you need to go PM. They say the underside is smooth, but I would have see a picture or better yet see it in person, because I haven't seen one that looked good yet (on the underside).
Maybe it looks great underneath and it will work out great, but I just would have to see that to believe it.
Enjoy,
Curt

<< Curt, are you sure you're not confusing handlaid with choppergun? What other process for fiberglass is there besides these two? >>
I could be confused on the terminology here, but I think press-molded is the third method and the best of the three. I believe the factory hoods (and pretty much everything else) were press molded. This is why original cars didn't have gel-coat. Hand laid and chopper gun parts do.

Re: Vanacor's Corvette (kenmo)
Good Morning Vette People,
I HAVE purchased a Hood from Vanacor's Corvette for my
1962. I live about 30 miles from Vanacor's and picked it up myself. So I also
got to see some of their work in progress. VERY GOOD PRODUCT! They are
100 percent correct in telling you they are VERY smooth in appearance.
I personally talked to Bryan Vanacor when I picked up the hood and he advised me that the hood may need to be slightly trimmed IF by chance
my fenders were previously repaired or somehow Not stock. HOWEVER
the new hood fit right in place with very minimal adjustments. The hinges
needed a few minor adjustments. Other than that, they suggest that
you lightly sand with about a 200 grit wet/dry paper before shooting the
primer and paint on the new hood. I highly recommend Vanacor's Corvette
parts. Very Nice people to deal with, Basically a family owned business.
And they DON'T try to offer you EVERYTHING Under the sun Just Correct
fitting High Quality Corvette parts.
Take Care,
