Looking for thoughts and help on 56 front end rebuild
I am in the middle of restoring my 56 Vette, and I am about to start taking the front end apart. I have to rebuild everything, including the steering box and column. Has anyone done that with the column and is there anything special I need to know about separating the column from the steering box? I see Mid America has a kit to redo the column which is around $500, which I believe includes whats needed to redo the box also. Then I am going to be redoing all the suspension parts. My other question is whats everyones opinion of keeping it original and rebuilding the stock components or upgrading to a new style IFS set up? Does anyone know if the ride quality would be drastically different if using the new set up to justify the cost and then having to get an aftermarket column? I am leaning towards keeping it original and only upgrading to disk brakes. Any help would be appreciated.

You can get side tracked really easily by reading all the hype.
The kingpin suspension in my 54 and 56 were trash and worked really bad. With an inexpensive rebuild kit, some instruction from this forum and the AIM they work great. After I rebuilt the first king pin setup it is suprisingly simple and extremely quick to R & R. The steering boxes are a pain but not difficult.
I've been driving my 54 for about 3 years and never regret rebuilding the stock suspension. No need for modern parts here. I frequently consider adding front disc brakes but the suspension performs like a champ
