a/c vs non a/c hood release cable for a 65
Can someone tell me the difference between the hood release cable for an ac car and non ac. I have an ac car and it seems that the cable is short. (Bracket is correct) Seems that the sharp bends around the ac ductwork are causing the cable to get real tight. From the end of the cable to the point where the cable enters the handle is 17 1/4". Are bot cables the same length or is the ac one longer than the non ac and by how much? I know that the ac bracket is longer.

Myron,
As I recall, the A/C cable is longer, but I'm not sure by how much. I have a '65 A/C car and can measure the cable on mine (I think!) if you'd like and compare it to the cable on my '66 non-A/C car. I also have a new A/C aftermarket cable that I'm not using if you're interested.

The a/c cable is definitely longer to reach around the lower a/c duct. The regular cable doesn't quite reach the release lever under the hood. Just prior to having my car judged at Bloomington my cable broke. I tried to replace it with a non a/c cable and it wouldn't quite reach. There wasn't much difference; maybe and inch or so.

As you said, the difference is in the bracket. The bracket for the a/c car is longer to clear the a/c duct. I haven't noticed any difference in the length of the cable. The cable often breaks where the screw tightens on it to hold it to the release mechanism and can't be reused because it won't reach. The cable shouldn't have to be "snaked" around the a/c duct, the longer bracket should feed it below it. Please post when you find out for sure if two new cables are different lengths for a/c and non a/c.

Here's what the description says on LIC's site about the cable. Note it says longer bracket and cable. I've not been able to locate the cable by itself.

Measuring the A/C cable that I have, from the back of the black pull to the end of the pull cable measures 23 1/2". The cable housing measured from the same point is 19 1/2". Mine is the cable and housing only, without the mounting bracket.
I would think you could just pull the **** & inner cable from the housing and reinsert into your present housing if you chose to do so.
Should you still be interested, let me know & I'll get you some pictures out with a price.
Thanks,
Ron

Yeah this is a strange one because the 1965 AIM (only year AIM I have) doesn't really "specify" a different hood release cable, but it does show a different p/n as an optional item in the C60 section. Kind of a footnote under the normal parts list.
Looking at the parts manual, it does not list that "optional" p/n, but it does note "except A/C" for the standard hood release cable.

Cable with dimensions

Attached is my cable with dimensions from my 65 with ac. Can someone tell me if the cable is the correct length. It requires some "stretching" to make it work.

My a/c car hood cable is the same as yours, except for the actual wire length. Where yours measures 19", mine is 19 7/8" and it is even with the lock on the end, so there is no room to spare. Looks like you need at least 7/8", and 1" or more would be better. I have an old one that broke off at 19" and it was too short to use. With the handle pushed all the way in, you should have about 3 1/2" of cable showing on the other end.
If yours is really close, I guess you could bend the bracket back a little in a pinch, and also pull the spring loaded lever it hooks to a little closer to the firewall, but not so close as to release the hood.

I have two outer cables & brackets from inner cable breaking the only way to get inner cable is to buy the assembly and you will have an extra bracket & outer cable too! have seen many for sale with the inner cable broken but never a good one.

Dimensions of the ac hood release cable are shown in attached photo. Top numbers are for ac cable release and bottom numbers are for non ac cable release. Thanks to everyone for their help.
