Default Foam on 67 POA valve pipe

Im redoing my AC and need to redo the foam that was on the pipe coming off the POA. Where do I get it? I've seen tape but that doesn't look like what was on it.

Any ideas?

Check out the ratings on the "insulation" in a can at home depot or lowes...they might be what you need if someone doesn't have any other leads to the correct stuff...

Ed:

Not aware of any "foam" on or around the 1967 POA valve. Check your Chevrolet Service Manual or 1967 AIM for pictures..... although I have seen a few POA valves with what appears to be an "undercoat-type" coating or something similar around the POA valve middle flange area. Is this what you are referring to??

The POA valve will sweat/ice during operation, so it is possible that someone tried to insulate it to reduce this sweating. The factory MAY have sprayed some type coating to prevent condensate buildup and rusting on the middle flange area.....but I seem to remember that it was more of a "cold galvanizing" material than a foam.

There is an asphalt tape that insulates the expansion valve sensing capalliary on the inlet pipe to the POA.

The tape is cork & asphalt any real parts store can get it (you might have to buy a roll) it is only used on the suction tube to insulate the capaliary bulb conection about 5-6''along pipe.

Tape is/was available from 3M. Check with your local REAL autoparts store. NAPA, Carquest, etc. Autozone and Advance will not have a clue as to what you are talking about.

The original sealant was foam only without cork in it. It was just some kind of odd sealant. I have a NOS roll of the last GM stuff and it does have the cork in it and is real sticky. When you squeeze down on it it seems to mesh together, but it still has the cork and is not original.

What is funny is that while GM was making production cars and still using this stuff, it was not available over the counter in the production style. (only in the roll). The closest thing you'll get is the cork stuff and if you are going NCRS you may want to consult your team leader in regards to any deductions.

About 10 years ago, John Hinkley and I discussed this on the CPRL thread but I'm not what solution became of this conversation. Maybe someone could search the archives and see or contact John.

IMHO,

Ernie

The stuff I used to use was in a blister-pack, from "Cool-Aid!", #34312, made by Motormite Div. of R&B, Inc., in Colmar, PA 18915-1800. A pack had a 2" wide x 12" long roll of the thick self-sticky black insulation tape.

Hi John-

Did it have the cork in it or was it closer to the original stuff?

You could see small particles of cork in it. Maybe an automotive or commercial A/C shop would have something closer to the black original stuff.

Ok.. good to know. I think I'm going to go out looking for something closer. It has to be out there and I have a good feeling I know where to start on finding it.

Thanks. I'll try one of the tapes suggested. I was wondering what NCRS standards would be for this.

I'd contact your team leader.. ask them their opinion. It's kid of hard to be 100 percent in this area when so far nothing out there is correct.
