Default 6 speed for a 1966

I have a NOM and doing a new GMPP crate motor. Anyone done a 6 speed on one of these C-2? The only way I would consider is if somebody makes a kit that lets me retain my stock shifter. Thanks for reading.

Why not one of the 5 speeds?

If you go with a Tremec 6sp, you have to cut the frame and fabricate a trans bracket. An offset shifter is required. I also had to go with a hydraulic clutch. A Tremec is much cheaper than other offerings but probably ends up costing the same, with more labor hours required and additional parts cost.

The Richmond 6 speed is more or less a bolt in with just a fabbed trans mount required. Not a double overdrive though.

I spent about 20hrs relocating my Long shifter to place the lever in factory location as well as building a tranny mount, not for the faint of heart or the smart. I had to raise the shifter 3/8" and forward 1 1/8" it clears the uncut factory tunnel hole by about 1/16" all the way around. good luck in making your decision. Keith

I'll research the 5 speeds. I guess I wanted the cool factor of having a 6 speed and be able to retain my stock shifter if a bolt on kit was available. Sounds like the Richmond kit might work though.

The only reason you'd want the double overdrive is if you have a very high numerical axle ratio, like a 4.56.

I wanted a 6 speed, which was close ratio in 1-5 gears, with a single overdrive ratio, and the only way to get that was with the ROD 6 speed. The Richmond is old tech, with heavy gears/inertial weight and external shift rods.

I went with a Keisler 5 speed.

I have a Richmond 5sp OD in my c-2 BB, is a very tight fit, the external shifter is a pain to get in because of lack of space and the transmission is a bit hard to shift. It is one of the best upgrades I have done to the car, because of the OD but if I had to do it over again I will go the Tremec route.

Thanks all for the reply's. I went with a TKO 600 from Hurst Driveline. Keeping my fingers crossed it goes smoothly. I've read positive and neg feedback on this forum about all the aftermarket companys offering OD tranny's.

Default Richmond 5OD in midyear.

Shf22, plz tell me more about the Richmond 5OD in a midyear. I would have bet there was no way to make the Long shifter come out the stock shifter hole. Did you install the transmission and shifter without cutting the floor. Would you send me a picture. Thanks Scott

Scott, I'm going the Tremec 5sp not the Richmond. I'm in the beginning phase and just ordered the kit this week. Others on here have done the Tremec set up on a midyear. They perhaps may respond. Also, type Tremec into the search in this section. Lots of info.

I'd like to see more shots of the T-56 install, I was sure that the tunnel would have to be re-worked to get a proper driveline angle.

Why not go with the Keisler SS700? The waiting period should be almost over. You can probably have a newer, better, stronger, and much smoother shifting trans by July. Unless you drive your car "leisurely" all the time, then you'll probably notice that the TKO is very notchy on the 2-3 shift. The newer generation Keislers like the RS and SS 5 speeds are butter smooth (reportedly).

PS: I don't believe that Keisler is taking any more orders for the RS600. Keisler Jeff/Chris might chime in here. The RS is lighter in weight with lower inertial mass, slightly less torque handling ability with a wider ratio spread than the SS. I'd recommend it for a SBC over the SS, if it's still available. Otherwise, wait for the second gen SS600, due out late this year, which will have wider ratio than the SS700.
