Default Engine numbers and block casting help

I have an engine that was sold to me with the vette I bought that has a cast number 3869942 which means 427 if I understand it right. Then I can't find a date in the back of the cast. The stamping reads TOI07IL 6112215 then my vin id 6111420. I'm told that this is the code correct numbers and the original numbers to the car. can some one explain this to me thank you .

Casting # 3869942 is the first generation 427 block, used in 1966 and 1967 in all big block applications.

The stamp pad suffix "IL" would indicate a 1966 or 1967 427 ci 390 HP engine.

It appears that the VIN for the car and the stamp pad # do not match -6112215 vs 6111420 - and are some 795 units apart, so I would question it being original to the car.

Can you post some pictures of the casting and stamp pad numbers?

Edit - are you sure that the third character in the stamp is an "I"? It should be a numerical designation - like "1", which would then indicate that it was built on January 7th. The "6" in the VIN you cite should be a "S" for the St. Louis assembly plant. What is the number in the car's VIN right before the 6/S - is it a 6 or a 7?

That's a '66 427/390hp, assembled on January 7th, 1966 at Tonawanda, originally installed in '66 Corvette #112215, produced at St. Louis on January 27th; if your car's VIN is 111420, it's not original to your car.

The "I" character was used in place of the "1" character in the engine plant stamp - that's perfectly normal; there's no "S" in the VIN derivative stamped on the front pad - just a "6" for the model year, followed by the last six digits of the VIN.

The casting date on a 942 block is found just above the pan rail, a couple of inches forward of the starter, and it's upside-down.
