1963 Intake / Carb Originality Question

1963 Intake / Carb Originality Question
I have very dim light in my garage. I pulled the carb and I rebuilt it. I then I covered the intake holes. I just found (before I replaced the carb) a 1/2 inch spacer and an aluminum gasket on top of the intake holes and a carb gasket under.
I don't know if that is factory, so I just put a carb gasket between the intake and the carb.
It runs great.
Thanks
Jack

GM did not use a 1/2 inch spacer. what intake and carb do you have

Le Mans Master
Carburetor Insulator Spacer
Carburetor Baffle Plate

These would be stock on a '63 327/300hp engine. The insulator is about 1/2" thick and is intended to isolate the carb from the heat of the intake and help fight fuel percolation.
Good luck... GUSTO

There are also aftermarket thin aluminum spacers that take a gasket between each one.
The phenolic spacers above are better. I run one for a Holley.
They help isolate the carb from the manifold heat.

I guess I will have to remove the carb and put the 2 gaskets and spacer in.
Thanks

On the intake is a thick black carb gasket, on top of that is the 1/2 inch insulator spacer, on top of that is a thin aluminum plate. Will that thin plate be enough to stop any vacuum leak?
Thanks

I am thinking that thin plate needs a gasket.
My experience on spacers, plates etc.. is they require a gasket on each surface.

The Assembly Manual (pg C-311) shows exactly the same layout as the Paragon diagram does with no mention of a gasket between the Baffle Plate and the carb on the 300hp & 340hp engines. Having said that, I'm inclined to agree with 1sttexan and want to put at least a very thin gasket between the plate and the base of the carb.
My '63 came with a WCFB and I replaced that back in 1969 (which is also the last time I can even remember seeing that carb), so I'm not the best person to ask. There are a few others here that would know the correct answer such as JohnZ (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/memb...194-johnz.html). If you PM him, he'll give you the straight scoop.
Good luck... GUSTO

The Assembly Manual illustration (section L-75, sheet 3.00, L-75 view) is correct; from the bottom up it's intake, gasket, insulator, stainless baffle, and carburetor.
