C1 Air Cleaner Assembly
My 62' has a ZZ4 motor in it I want it to look as stock as possible.
It has a 750 Holley. Well my new stock Air Cleaner Assembly arrived
today and the base is to small so I used the Holley base. Will this work
anybody else tried it.
Fuel line is that braided crap so I got a new Fuel Line too but puzzled
about what filter to use and how to hook it up so it looks stock or could have been stock. Suggestions
A clamp kit and new correct rubber hoses come next and then shielding.
All the braided stuff and that red crap goes.

What do you mean by "Holley base" ?
Post a photo - pretty hard to say if it's going to work when we can't see what you're working with.

The base of the air cleaner I had on it has a larger hole in the center
and fits the big Holley. Think it will work.

FWIW, I have a complete original Pontiac air cleaner assembly (rechromed some years ago, looks pretty good) I don't need anymore, so i can sell it, what are these things worth? I think it was used on the '65 326 CI Tempest and base motor GTO, steel, chrome, looks just like a '61 unit except has a larger hole for the Holley/Q-Jet, though if you try to use it on a Holley with the air horn that stick up, you will need a spacer as the top of the air cleaner will hit the carb vent. They work well on 6210 Holley spreadbores, though.
That said, the 1" tall element it really only designed for motors of about 350 CI that don't wind much past 5K RPM.

That will not work since most of the bases goes upwards underneath and are not flat.
Here is what I did: I took a cheap chrome cleaner. Took the top of the cleaner and had a machine shop cut the correct size diameter in the top. Turn the top upside down and used it as the base. Then used the correct air cleaner top.

Im using the same ZZ4 in my 62. I use a drop down base from a 68 Corvette as it has a Quadrajet carb. . It has a 2 3/4 height filter with a chrome top and is part of the PCV system . No interference with the hood.
A 65-66 Corvette drop down base is sized for a Holley which is applicable to your setup.

James .
Looks like a good idea and if what I'm trying doesn't work I'll try it. I have the old base and new top in place. The stud for the wing nut
is to long I have to cut it off about 7/8". Then test drive it.

FYI I wouldn't think of selling one for less than $200 - I sold my extra one (with mint lid) 5 years ago for well over $300

Doug, it's 1.4 inches tall, don't make it worse!

1" x 15" dia x pi x 6CFM/sq in= 282 CFM air flow before you start to get flow resistance through the filter, and resulting vacuum inside the air cleaner. 6 CFM is pretty much the accepted flow rate for a paper element before air flow resistance starts to occur
Does it stop flowing at 282 CFM? No, but i noticed on my modified L79, with the EFI, that I was getting around 8" of vacuum inside the manifold at WOT over 6500 RPM, when WOT should have 0" vacuum inside the manifold, 10" vacuum = 25% power loss.
The vacuum didn't become noticeable until about 5200 RPM or so, then it built asymptotically.

large filter=better mileage
Switching from the stock air cleaner to a drop base 3" cleaner usually made a good 1 mpg improvement on my work test loop of 60 to 100 miles, mainly at over 3k rpm with minimum traffic. 350 with afb, lots of cam, 3.36 rear, 2.02 heads.
Also, just disconnecting the secondary linkage was good for another 1 mpg despite driving the same speeds, never found a cure for that problem.
