Default What is a " Bird cage"

I hate to ask such a simple question to many of you, but I do not know what a Bird cage is I hear people refer to. Must be part of the frame on a c2 car? Thanks

The birdcage is the steel skeleton that forms the foundation for the Corvette body; it was welded together as a unit, bonded to the underbody, and the rest of the body was built and bonded around it before the body was attached to the frame.

Just for additional information, the forerunner to the birdcage began in mid-57 production.
A metal structure was installed just forward of, and attached to, the door hinge pillers. This metal structure included frame work that went forward to the firewall, and then there was a metal channel that wrapped around under the windshield frame connecting each side together. There was also some metal structure inside each door that tied to the door hinges and the post for the door window. Last, there was also a metal structure inside the rocker panels on each side. This structure inside the rockers was also tied to the framework for the hinge pillars. Thus, the mid-57 through 62 also had some metal structure to strengthen the body and doors.

I heard that 58 was the only year that used Aluminum, is this true?
