Question about 427 Authenticity
I am going to look at a 1967 400HP Air coupe tomorrow. It is listed to be an early production 67 coupe and states the engine is listed as a 66 but original to the car. Here is what it says:
ENGINE:
This car comes equipped from the factory with a 427/400 hp Tri-Power Engine & Air Conditioning. The Engine is the original numbers matching engine. All of the casting codes and dates are correct. The block casting number: 3869942The block casting date : J66 = October Both Heads are dated J16 = October 1Water Pump is dated J276 = October 27Both exhaust manifolds are dated October Engine was built T1109 = November 9,1966
Does that like it could be correct? It is documented back to the original owner. It was Sunfire yellow and now its black and used to have a Powerglide and now it has a Muncie but he has the original Transmission.
Could this be Legit? It seems logical that the motor would have casting dates from 1966 since it was built in 1966.
Thanks

A 67 built in 66, would have to have parts made in 66. There's no way for parts to be dated after the build date of the car, and still be original to that car.

What you need to find out is when the first 3904351 block was cast. November 66 is not that early. Back then cars were introduced in September, and I believe new production was started in August, so I think your early November engine build should be a 3904351 block. I'm sure there are a few people on here with September and October engine build dates---Let's see what casting # block is in their cars.

I have an early Nov 66 car. The engine isn't the original but the VINs of this block and my car were reasonably close. It is a #351 block with a Sept casting date and a late Sept build date.

Block should be a "351".

EDIT: From the latest NCRS Judging Manual for 1967 Model Year: "The casting number 3869942 is correct for approximately the first 200 cars, which is a carry-over of 1966 production. The most common number is 3904351. The casting number3916321 is possible on approximately the last 100 cars."
What is the VIN #??. The first few hundred cars were built during the last week of August and first few weeks of September.
A car built after November 9, 1966 would have a VIN of around 4000 - 5000.

My L-36 car was built 11/22/66. It's original 351 block was cast 8/31/66 (H316) and I believe (going off memory) the engine build was 10/28/66 (will verify). Hope this helps.

I'll see what the VIN is. So the fact that this car was built in December suggest that it should NOT have a 942 block but rather a 951 block? If a block cast in August was a 351 block, how could this be cast in October and be a 942 block? Am I missing something here?

The "T1109" is only part of the engine plant stamp - what's the 2-character suffix after the 1109? Got a close-up photo of the stamp pad? If it has the car's VIN derivative on it, someone's re-stamped it.

Tank Sticker
Interesting thread - thanks. If I could ask a question please - is there any way the tank sticker tells what is the block number? My tank sticker for a '67 shows an option number "02L68AA" CONV 390 to 400HP. Of course this says it is an L68, but does that correlate to a 3904351 block? Or does the build date then assure that has to be a ...351 block? (Build date October 26, 1966) Thanks.

I dont mean to butt in, But My book says that a 942 block was installed in early 67 427 cars, and it has been found in as late as car number, 7115073 which is a 435hp car

more to think about.I had an original motor '66 390hp car that was built the last day of production in '66.It had a "351" block in it.I would bet that there were no 942 blocks with a casting date of Oct.66.There was no longer a need to make them for a few months already.
