I know its a little late but I'm thinking the car would have gone faster with the vent window closed. I think they call it aerodynamics or some such. It was invented by the pie R square crowd...even though everyone knows pie R round and cornbread R square.

There was a thread about this car a while back. A gentleman was looking for it and apparently found it.

Dan,

What kind of induction did you use with the GMC 301?

Originally there were three 46mm Weber DCOEs; later on, a conversion was made to three 48mm Weber IDAs. That necessitated the use of a large hood scoop for the carbs to clear. I currently have the DCOEs on the car--the way it ran when it won the Indy Nationals in '67.

If you have any pics of the engine I'd really enjoy seeing the 46's and how it's all packaged under the hood. Great race car!

Me too, reverse order: GM, then Ford.

Steve Ambrose (Bldg. 4 in Dearborn) had an Altered powered by a 300 CID 6. The cylinder head was made up from Boss 302 heads cut and welded to fit the 300.

Steve Ambrose, wow, I think that altered was the recipient of Bruce Sizemores engine from his Pinto. What year was this?

Here is my first attempt at injection (1970) using a modified 427 Algon system. Ran out of head at the final point.(car ran low 11's and a couple of high 10's) That is where the Boss head conversion came in to play...more airflow which in turn gave the engine tremendous power.

Here is Bruce's Pinto after record run....we were arguing with the NHRA tech guru about the dropped snout and it's legality. Car at this point was in the 9's and cleaning up.

Note the Boss head/header arrangement. This setup actually was a "bolt on" deal after a lot of welding and machine work. The pushrods were about two or three inches long. No flex. This engine screamed.

Interesting article. It referenced that he "restored" it before selling it to a collector. That is a curious statement. He sold the car to Dana Mecum from whom I purchased it in '99. If you look at the pics in the photo, the lettering is all wrong, the Webers do not exist, the wheels aren't correct, and the black hardtop is missing. The license plate holder is gone, and all the teeth are displayed in the grille. Generic decals like STP and a bunch that don't make any sense are pasted all over the front fender (which took my design artist hours to remove) and the checkered flag work running the length of the bottom of the car is competely absent.

I spoke with Denny Kannenberg after I bought the car. A real nice guy, but to this day, I don't know what he was using as his frame of reference when "rebuilding" the car.

Fred:

Here's a quote from another forum (in 2005) re. Steve:

"Steve, Bob (Huettman) and Ray (Argenta) are my heroes.

They are the longest running Comp Eliminator team in the world with many "Wallys" in the trophy cabinet. Many pro teams seek their advice as there is a wealth of knowledge there.

For those who do not know it they run a 300 hybrid headed '23T altered roadster that runs in the 7.8 second zone at nearly 170 MPH in the quarter.

Magnificent engineering masterpiece.

FORD 300 INLINE SIX - THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN DRAG RACING"

I'm not sure when they started with the 6...must be a long time ago!

Very cool! Thanks for posting! What kind of intake manifold are you using? Are the webbers temperamental?

The manifold is from Pierce. The car never gets driven and is not streetable so the performance/running issue is mute. With Webers the only normal issue that needs to be addressed is the transition from idle to the power circuit at around 2200 rpm,
