I thought it was 0.7854 I read it somewhere many years ago. I could be mistaken though (wouldn't be the first and won't be the last time).

As to which is the better engine, obviously the 427. Look at all the $100,000, $200,000, $500,000 Corvettes over the years that were 427s and then check how many were 454s.

The 427 will rev faster than a 454, and due to stroke, can rev higher and keep the same piston speed as the 454. However, at speeds over 7000 rpm, you only have about 10 - 12 hours of life in the rods, which you aren't punished so harshly by the 6500 in the 454.

The 454 is cleaner emissions-wise, so if that is your criteria for better, then the 454 is.

The 454 produces more torque, and on the street stop light grand prix, torque is king.
We took the car out for a drive, maybe its me, but I think the 09 LS3 is a faster car.

as it should be, isn't the ls3 480 hp??....the ls is an amazing power plant and really likes modification combined with a lightweight package makes it a real winner for a swap.
bb's like mod's too and for the money for an ls3, you could build an aluminum bb and have it all!.....jmo....

the question becomes, when do you out power the tires??...then what do you do??

The LS3 with the NPP (Z06 type exhaust) is 436 hp, and about the same torque. Combined with the 6 speed vs the 4 speed in the 66 it seems to get going a bit quicker. And thats without mods....!!!

It is the thing that has amazed me. I was always a big block fan from 45 years ago. I also thought nothing would replace a real small block, since they really hadn't for years, even the LT-1 version didn't really replace it anywhere. The old SBC could be run low on oil, with plugs miss firing, overheating, and everything and still get you home if need be. The weak link was the HEI, but within a year or two, that thing was so rock dependable, you never saw a failure. LT-1 and Optispark was a mess.

Then the LS-1 came along, and produced power like crazy, gave incredible mileage, and just seems to run forever. Without question, if you want to play with Hot Rod Magazine and be classic old school, the BBC and SBC are still great mills to run. But if you want to make a load of dependable horsepower and go fast almost effortlessly, then the LS-x engines are the way to go today without question.

The one thing that amazed me more than anything is this. This video shows how effortlessly these engines run speeds that took more than a little massaging the old ones to achieve. Watch the HUD about 2:00 into it:

It also shows most Corvette drivers stink at driving fast, but that isn't the point here.

And it case you don't know.............. 63 was one year only and the hole in it is smaller, so other year transmissions won't fit.
