Default Finding owner of C2

A buddy of mine who is also a Vette guy got a lead on a C2 vette that was half burried in the snow. I went to look at it this morning and it's in the driveway of an empty house It has a license plate on it with a current sticker. There is a telephone number of the owner of the house on a For Sale sign on the house. He called the number and they don't know who parked it there but said it's been there for a while. My buddy has a friend that is a retire cop and he had someone run the plate number for him and it came back as not a good number even though the plate has a 2011 sticker on it.
Anyone with a suggestion of how I can track down the owner would be great. I'd love to make him an offer.

Thanks, Mark

Ask the neighbors, assuming there are some, but be careful. Dennis

Sounds a little strange that the owner of the house knew the car was there but did nothing about it? ( call the police to check it out etc). Would bother me too that the plates seem to be bogus. Like Bluestripe67 said, be careful!

Go back and ask to look inside and get vin#...
Go back to your buddy and have his cop friend run the vin.
You might get lucky this way.

Bogus plate could be as simple as keeping overzealous code enforcement
away.

It makes NO sense though, that calling the number on a for sale by owner produced an answer from a person who said they had no idea why the car was there.

You could try calling the local tax office to definitively find out who owns the property and match that up against the name/number on the for sale sign.
