Needle bearings
I put the king pin bearings in my 61 a few years ago. The
bearings are the same as an old Harley Sportster cam bearings. 67
iron head.
(they press into the side cover) Bearing number is B-138

Does this improve steering effort ?

i believe it not only makes steering easier, but you do not get the expansion and shrinkage of the brass bushing due to climate change. years ago, when i used the c1 as a everyday driver, the steering would get hard in the winter and loose in the summer. the needle bearings give you the best performance.

Keep in mind, if you source the Torrington (now Timken) p/n B-138 needle bearings on your own, you'll still need to have steps machined into your king pins to provide the proper inside dia. the needle bearings require. The bearings are cheap enough (8 req'd), but paying a machine shop to turn down your pins on a lathe may bring the total cost close to Speedway's $150 kit.
