Default 63 door slamming problem solved!!!

I have to slam the driver's but not the passenger's side door to get the latch to catch completely. Cause? Would a door latch mechanism repair kit (which is mostly springs) fix this? Adjusting the door striker plate helps somewhat to get the door working but doesn't help with the slamming.

latch kit from CC:

They don't seem to be worn on either side.

Start slamming the passengers door too, then they will match?

Have the same problem! I just tried some silicone on the door gaskets and it definitely helped. Not perfect though.

I doubt the latch mechanism is the problem.

You need to determine:

If the door latch and striker are aligning properley. The latch is only to hold the door shut, not up/down.

Is the door sitting square in the opening to the seal gaps (do you have a bad opening as the result of a poor repair).

Have you recently changed your door weatherstrips and how hard are they?

My 63 is a slammer too. I think it is due to the new weather seals.

Yup-- when I first put in new door seals, the doors were really hard to shut, and even pushed out at the top. After they settled in, shut a lot nicer now.

Thanks for the advise. No more slamming!!! I figured out what to do noting that the door would only close well if I pressed down pretty hard on it while I slammed. I got curious and looked to see if the latch and striker were lined up. I compared the driver side with the working passenger side. I discovered that the driver side was WAY off. I had to adjust up the door striker by at least 1/8-3/16inch. Not so easy. I had to file the metal part of the body where the striker plate attaches to elongate the holes. I had to file the front tooth on the striker plate down a bit as bubba had brazed on it.You can see the lower part of the hole now exposed by my handiwork:

My door alignment is pretty good:

Default Door slamming problem

I saw a report yesterday on CNN about a young man lying dead on the streets of Haiti from colora. His elderly mother was crouched next to him and telling the reporter that her house was destroyed by the earthquake and she only had her son to take care of her-she had no other family and now was totally alone in the world and nowhere to live.
I hope you can solve your door slamming problem-I know how serious it really is. You have my sympathies!!!
