Toms Rear Spindle Setup
I am putting together the trailing arms with Toms 30 spline sindles. I bought the entire setup but I am only talking about the spindles at this time. When I asked Tom how to set up the bearings he told me to preload the bearings to 10 to 15 in*lbs similar to say setting preload on a pinion, typical practice is to have no preload and use .002" endplay on a vette spindle application.
I'm at .002" endplay now. Why the difference in approach? I understand when Tom set these up himself years ago he preloaded the bearings. I posed this question to 632C2 (Steve) and he has 2 cars and one car has preload as Tom stated to do and the other has the .002" endplay.
So again which should be used and WHY

I set mine from Tom's at .0005" many years ago when I installed them. I recently took them apart to repack the bearings and they looked perfect. Many many drag strip runs, street miles, banzai top end runs and cross country trips. When I put them back together they still ck'd at .0005" with same bearings etc in place.
I would suppose Tom was trying to eliminate any movement at all on them during hard drag strip launches and to allow for slight initial wear. I've always used .0005-.001" and done well.

I had the same thoughts as you regarding the initial break in and hammering action when too large of an endplay was used.
Thank you
