That footage surprises me. I've never seen any for a build of a one-off car like that. Does any exist for the GSs?? SR2?
Also, they called it a Super Sport. I thought it was the Sebring Special.

It was called the Corvette SS and was prepped for Sebring with Juan Fangio at the wheel. I had the fortune to crawl all over, under and inside the car. VERY neat.

I think these pictures knock down the ugly rumor that has been circulating for decades, that Chevy bought a D-Jaguar, stuffed a small block in the Jag chassis and installed the new (magnesium?) body panels onto the hybrid racer.

The rumor was grounded in reality. Harley Earl wanted to go racing and borrowed a D Type Jag with a blown engine. The intent was to install a small block, convert the Jag to left hand drive, disguise it so it looked like a Corvette and then go racing at Sebring as an experimental Corvette. When Harry Barr, head of Chevy engineering found out, he asked Zora what he thought and Duntov expressed concern over the idea. Ultimately Duntov wrote a proposal for the development of a special sports-racing Corvette which was accepted, giving birth to the Corvette SS.
