Thats pretty cool.

I think the owners have mis-named it. It's not the world fastest Ferrari without a Ferrari engine.

It's a Cherrari.

So, what is it?

A Chevy or a Ferrari? I find it hard to hang the Italian banner over this feat when the power plant producing the speed was not.

Have to give them credit though. They must have had to come up with some 300 MPH duct tape to keep it together.

I used to have a road and track magazine with the fastest cars in the world in it. One was a 288 gto with a Chev in it. It was 1985 I wonder if it's the same car ? Stewy

I am curious what sort of comments this would get on the Ferrari forums....

Once in a while I will mention something about Chevs, and I get responses that include the words "garbage", and "junk".

They are a little different over there, some nice people there too, but a lot of snobs, even though they say they aren't.

I find the guys with the big money generally don't have time to tinker on the forums. So most are just car freaks like us. Ferrari has a great history so there is diverse group of people. Most people are just trying to learn to service their car so as not pay those massive service bills.
One guy has just done a clutch and saved himself 6k That's a lot of money to save for just a clutch job ! Stewy

Yep, same car. Bob Norwood built it in his Dallas shop in 1984. He has spent the last 26 years trying to justify the cost of cutting up a real 288 GTO?

Steve Trafton is an American Ferrari collector. Now he has given his exclusive hobby a record too.

With a 1985-model Ferrari 288 GTO was recently very fast on the salt flats at Bonneville.

Standard Body

Over two times the car achieved an average speed of 442 kmh.

- Our car has a standard body. It keeps not only the world record in its class, it is the world's fastest Ferrari and the world's fastest sports car, "said Trafton of the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

More on bilstoff E24BIL

Ferrari 288 GTO is a very special car, which was made in 272 copies in 1984 and 1985. Designed to satisfy the contemporary group b racing requirements. It had a turbo-fed 2.8-liter V8 engine.

No standard engine

Trafton car is not entirely original, to say the least. Under the hood, the rear compartment, there is now a big-block Chevroletmotor of 8.5 liters with two turbos. It provides between 2000 and 2500 horsepower, more than 400 original

The conditions were actually not quite perfect record during the trip.

Smooth

- It was very smooth, I was lucky to be able to control the car to spin.

100 people have worked for three years with the car to get it ready in record attempts.

Trafton, who is 64 years, is a retired financier. He has six Ferraris, from 60 -, 70 - and 80-century, plus a 1957 Morgan. In general, he uses a Dodge pick-up.

Ferrari 288-a he will now put in the garage and devote his free time kayaking and hiking - the more extreme kin
