Hi Jim, was that deemed legal by the NHRA?? I am now at the hard decision point of whether to install a bar or not. I only raced once last year and was yelled at for going under 11.50 . The car should run maybe in the 10s this year. I hate to surrender the soft top. No way around it at here in NJ. Jim.

Herb. I had one custom made when I built the 69. Tight fit in a 69 coupe. A midyear should be pretty easy for a pro. I need to have one made for my 62 real soon. It insist on it being removable. I can't see building a car that I can't get the body off. I'm sending it to the same guy that did the 69.

Yeah I know...just figured I'd add it for the other folks.
Well...it's run at quite a few NHRA tracks and they've been happy so far other than it isn't legal for the 9's in a convertible! The attachment system is fine...the only possible sticky point it the angle of the rear bars...but there is just so much you can do with a top on the car so they really have no choice. That's why we did the crossbar deal to allow us to lessen the angle some and not need to notch the deck as bad. In these cars you have an issue getting the bar as far from the driver's helmet as they like too...but there is just so much you can do so they say it's fine.

When at the track I used a 1" spacer under the carb and I install extension on hood latches to lift rear of the hood. That shot was literally an hour after making 9 sec passes at Bowling Green as we pulled into the Corvette Assy. Plant.
Sort of a nasty pic back there but you can get the idea. There are stubs welded to frame that come out horizontal and the crossbar attaches at all junctures with 4 bolts through a flat cloverleaf plate.
The main hoop attaches the same way with vertical stubs. The bar is moly and weighs 26 lbs. Took a LOT of work to get the soft top able to function as well as make sidebars work with top up and down and make it all removable too.

Couldn't you have moved the braces out more so that they went to the frame instead? Even doing an angle so that the top mounting point was more inward than the bottom mounting point would have been stronger.

Installing a bar or cage infringes into the interiors function and accessibility. On Convertibles especially ...the deck lid will likely need to be cut for rear lateral bars. The cage in my roadster did allowed the hard top to be used , but left the hatch flimsy due to the cross bracing cut. I bought a un- cut replacement deck lid but havent decided how to proceed. I've got 4 of 6 points done on my bar so far. It's welded directly to the frame. I'll see if I can dig up some pics of it from before the body was back together/on.
There's a good pic of the bar in one of the pics in this old thread. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...7-project.html
If you need anymore, let me know and I'll run over to the body shop to snap a few.
