Default Tie down loops found on 1953 #18 anybody now ?

Hey Guys and Gals, I had Russ Uzes and Mick Swezey come down to take a look at #18 and while Russ was taking pictures he noticed that #18 had these tie downs welded to the frame, Left and right side are uniform in shape and placement, This car was never a race car and We were wondering if anyone out there have seen these before on an early Vette or can shed some light on why they are there. Thanks, Ki

Yep, I've seen them on EARLY 53's. It's from the factory.

Can't tell you when they discontinued them.

I believe that it was a type of traction bar type device. As the leaf spring twists up under a hard load it stops the spring from rapping around the axle.

as reasonable as that sounds, i find it hard to believe that a 6 cylinder power glide could wrap the springs, unless the springs are rubber bands...

MOTORAMA show car stuff. I will bet it was a show car originally used by Chevrolet to tour, so the factory added these for shipping ease of securing the vehicle.

Since 53's, especially very early ones were virtually hand made from start to finish, I remember being told/learning that those loops on VERY early (first 20-30 cars) were there to facilitate flipping the frame over during assembly.

BINGO!!!!

You nailed it Chuck. After reading your post I searched thru the early 53 pics in Noland's Digital Collection (which is nearing completion by the way), and found the attached pic. This shows an early 53 frame right before the workers flipped it.

Found this old thread tonight. I did a re-paint on car #035 a few years ago. It had the loops as well as #044. #062 does not have them, so it would reason that the loops stopped somewhere between #044 and #062.

#044 Frame

The REAL 1953 #029, owned by Susan Rupe, that had its identity stolen, has the same loops. I believe there is a pic of that frame in one of the Vette Vues articles that Ken Keyser did on the two #029's and the attempted identity theft of the REAL #029. Vette Vues, Feb and Mar 2010.

Hi Jim,

The Digital Collection will not be produced. All production plans ceased almost a year ago.

Russ is extremely busy right now and probably not checking into CF frequently, so I'm "speaking out of turn" and answering for him.

WHY?????????????????????????
Is it because of Noland's health?

That's probably about right.

I was thinking it was earlier, i.e., the first 20-30 cars, but it obviously carried a bit further.

so not to get off topic here, i did go to nolandadams.com and other than asking me for $29.95 it showed nothing of what was contained in the site.. I guess they're still working on it or need to finish what was started.. I'm sure he's got some good stuff up there..

Russ is absolutely correct!!!!

The first 33 cars had them because they use them to flip the frame over during assembly. Car 34 did not have them. If you need more frame pictures with them on pm me and I will send them to you,

I stumbled over it a couple of weeks ago and tried to sign up, and it wouldn't accept any of my credit cards; kinda dumb to put up a site that doesn't explain what it is, has no preview or information, encourages you to join, and won't let you. I sent Noland a note, but haven't heard back from him. The woman who bought the rights to all of his stuff bugged me constantly to go in with Noland as his partner on the site, but I wasn't interested. Hope it works out OK for him once it's up and running.
