Default power steering in C1

I have a 1958 Corvette that I am restoring. I want to put power steering and a tilt wheel in the car. I know the Pinto style rack and pinion in every hot rod application. I don't know how this might fit in a C1. Anyone got an idea about doing this cleanly.

There are several places that have kits to install the mustang II front suspensions. There should be quite a bit of info with a quick search.

tilt wheel is not going to work in a 58; too close to chest...

i have a TCI IFS with power steering in my 62; takes some getting used to because of the quickness/sensitivity, but beats 'armstrong' steering when parking...

Corvette Central sells a front end. Not sure how it measures up against Jim Meyers, TCI and others....

Part number is 571216 without sway bar and 571091 with sway bar. It ain't cheap $3100.00 and $3300.00

I hope this isn't a dumb question but does that pic (there's no description with the item) show the suspension and disk brakes? If so it's not rediculously expensive if it's converting to power steering, upgrading the suspension, and converting from drum to disk.

Is that power steering? It looks like a manual rack.

a power rack will fit in the same space, just costs more... probably the reason between the 3100 & 3300 $$$s..

This will probably really show my naivete but I've been under my original '61 lubing the 22 grease nipples on the front end today and it looks a lot like what is pictured above....coils, upper/lower A-arms, tie rod ends (I already have disc brakes)...of course I have kingpins and a center link. So what is the big deal with the manual front end pictured above ? Is it just better geometry ? Better mechanical advantage for steering ? Easier maintenance ? Etc. ?

I thought it said the higher price was for the sway bar, but it is possible they do offer it.

Night and day difference in a rack and pinion and the old corvette steering box as far as steering ease goes. No lag or play, much more responsive. Personally I do not think power steering is needed with the rack and pinion set up.

you're right... power steering, or even R&P, is not needed; but it sure does make everyday driving a lot more enjoyable...

I used the Jim Meyer setup with the power rack (no additional cost for power rack). The trick was engineering the pump to still work with the front mounting. I built a custom bracket, used a smaller pulley and engineered a bracket to hold the resevoir. The set-up is super clean and the steering is solid (not twitchy or floaty feeling).

I have power steering on my 60, my method Pump the wide whites up to 40 psi and it's not heavy at all or you could go to gym and work those little biceps so you can turn the wheel.
Although it would make the C1 a real joy with power steering it is heavy at standstill and making sharp 90 degree turns ........ Stewy

yes, with the Meyer set up you get rack and pinion steering, disc brakes and coil over shocks/springs along with the front cross member.

Here is a link to their instructions.....was easy to follow and if you have questions you can call and they will help over the phone....
