My starter is a Delco Remy 1107275. Does anyone know if there is a starter smaller in size that will fit.

Due to the headers it is a very tight fit.

I used an AutoZone #DLG9990S which is a small diameter gear reduction Starter. It's a brand new new made by Delco (with a Delco label on it) and it's lifetime guaranteed. Might check their website and see if that will work. It spins the ZZ454 with NO problems at all so it should have no problems with as small block. If that's not the right one, I know they have both (staggered and straight holes) available.

The above starter will not work as its a staggered nose starter. 327`s use a straight across nose. Your solution would be one of those high dollar hot rod mini pieces if you don't want the OE style starter because of its size. I would rather fight the size of the OE starter than the hot rod piece if you can get it in.....The same starter nose also fits a Buick and Caddie engines except its a high torque starter or heavy duty and is the same overall size and fits a 327

I bought the Powermaster #9202 from Summit for my 1965 L79 for 170 dollars. It's a very small starter, and only weighs 8.5 lbs. It is a gear reduction starter with 4.4:1 gearing. It also comes with the R terminal on the solenoid, which most aftermarket starters don't. They also have the starter for the 168 tooth flywheel, with the staggered mounting bolt design. I think it's model #9200. I used 2 mounting shims that were provided on my installation. I would think header fit would not be an issue with this starter, it's so compact. It has an inline design, and I have had no problems with heat soak.

88 and up corvette starter for small flywheel. Mid 90's S10 for large flywheel. Simple and available at any parts store.

Google up DB Electrical. That's where I got my mini starter from. They are new production, economical high torque mini starters and they will have what you need for under $100.00. This starter will start an engine up to at least 700 HP with high compression. It will most certainly do what you need. Mine is tucked up on a 350 block with headers and a road race oil pan. Weighs less than half of the original brick that was on your car.

Actually, the staggered or straight bolt pattern is a function of the flywheel/flex plate size. The large ones (168 teeth) require the staggered nose on the starter; the small ones (153 teeth) require the inline bolt pattern nose. BTW, the starter noses may be swapped on the starter motor itself.

Thanks guys.

I ended up going to a local starter/generator shop and doing an exchange for $79. They had a rebuilt unit on the shelf. I really would have liked one of smaller units but the 3 bolt patterns just do not line up on any other starter. So last night the 80 lb beast went back in. I will also will be making up a heat shield for it because the old one had heat soak issues.

From what the shop told me is that in 65/327 they changed the bolt pattern which would allow me to use a smaller unit.

Not sure about faster, but they are lighter, smaller and produce way more torque so it can easily spin up a 600-700 HP engine.

I replaced the battery on my Mercedes SL with a battery that is supposed to give alomost a 100 amperes extra starting power.

So it did. Gee how that engine turns when i turn the key

The reason i ask is because if my car have not been used for lets say 3 weeks it feels like the gas is flowing back to the gas tank so i have to pump the pedal a few times before it starts. Thought that if the starter spun faster the car might start faster

Off course the torque will have a lot to say i suppose?
